Meet the Engineer | |
“ | ” |
The Engineer is a soft-spoken, amiable Texan from Bee Cave, Texas, USA with an interest in all mechanical things. He specializes in constructing and maintaining buildings that provide support to his team, rather than being a front line class, making him the most suitable for defense. The Engineer's various gadgets include the Sentry Gun, an automated turret that fires at any enemy in range, the Dispenser, a device that restores the health and ammunition of nearby teammates, and Teleporters that quickly transport players from point A to point B.
Because the Engineer's ingenious devices are under constant threat from explosives and devious enemy Spies, a good Engineer must keep his gear under a watchful eye and under repair with his Wrench at all times. When the Engineer needs to get his hands dirty, his trio of generic yet capable weapons, along with the assistance of his helpful hardware, make him more than capable of holding his own in a fight. If need be, the Engineer can even pick up and haul constructed buildings to redeploy them in more favorable locations. While usually viewed as a defensive class, the Engineer has a selection of high-tech weapons that allow him to destroy projectiles or to build faster-deploying, less damaging Sentry Guns, which give him great utility at the front lines too. His Teleporters are also a key point to both the offensive and defensive team's success, allowing slower, heavier classes to reach the front-lines quicker.
The Engineer is voiced by Grant Goodeve in the game, and by Nolan North in the short film Expiration Date.

Basic strategy
- Use the construction PDA to construct Sentry Guns, Dispensers, and Teleporters in places that are beneficial to your team.
- You need metal to build, repair, and upgrade your Buildings. Collect fallen ammo boxes or remains of buildings to get more metal.
- Hit your Sentry Gun with your Wrench to upgrade it with metal. Each level adds more health and firepower.
- Build Dispensers to provide your teammates with health and ammo. They also generate metal for you to use.
- Build Teleporters to help your team get to key locations with ease.
- Keep an eye out for enemy Spies attaching Sappers to your Buildings. Use your Wrench to remove Sappers.
- Press E to call for a Medic if you get hurt. Nearby Medics will be notified of your need.

- Updated
trigger_hurt
entities to allow Engineers building in them when they are set for zero or negative damage.
July 2, 2015 Patch #1 (Gun Mettle Update)
- Construction boosts (wrench hits, redeploys) from multiple sources is now additive instead of multiplicative. Calculations are based around a 1x base building speed.
- Increased base wrench construction speed on hit boost by 50%. Buildings now build 2.5x faster instead of just 2x (additive of 1.5x + base speed).
- Teleporters and Dispensers redeploy +50% faster (2.5x without wrench boost, 5.5x with wrench boost).
- Building pick up speed penalty reduced from 25% to 10%.
- On Wrench equip change, buildings no longer self-destruct unless the building type is changed (i.e. Only Sentry explodes when switching from Wrench to Gunslinger).
- Building repair costs increased from 20 metal to 33 metal to repair 100hp per wrench hit (from 5HP per metal to 3HP per metal).
- Level 2 and Level 3 Sentries have less passive damage resistance against Heavy miniguns. Level 2 Sentry Minigun resistance changed from 20% to 15% and Level 3 changed from 33% to 20%.

- Fixed a bug where the Engineer was able to heal a linked teleporter while it was building. This now matches the behavior for the other buildings.
- Fixed the Engineer's missing pelvis hitbox.
- Level 1 teleporters now cost 50 metal (previously 125).
- Changed how much metal destroyed objects drop and fixed destroyed teleporters dropping more metal than intended.
- Fixed Engineer teleporter exits sometimes detonating when used due to invisible geometry.
December 2, 2021 Patch (Smissmas 2021)
- Fixed Engineer losing metal when hitting damaged buildings while they are being re-deployed after pick-up
July 12, 2023 Patch #1 (Summer 2023 Update)
- Fixed the Engineer not being able to move for a short period of time after doing The High Five taunt.
Trivia
- The Engineer was added to the original Team Fortress mod to appeal to players who lacked traditional skills required to perform well in first-person shooters.
- The Engineer was also added due to the developers of Team Fortress being inspired by the construction mechanics of the real-time strategy game Command & Conquer.[2]
- The Engineer wears his default helmet backwards; however, this is not an uncommon practice among construction workers.
- The Engineer seldom removes his welding goggles. To date, the only instances in which the Engineer has his goggles off are in the Loose Canon and True Meaning comics.
- The Engineer built the Sentry Gun under contract from TF Industries in 1965. The PDF manual for the game that is listed in Steam shows a blueprint and promotional guide to using the Sentry Gun.
- The Engineer's favorite equation is, in fact, part of the equation that governs character lighting in-game, known as Phong. Furthermore, the equation can be referenced in page five of Illustrative Rendering in TF2.
- The first BLU team Engineer resembled Nikola Tesla, armed with a bag of blueprints instead of a PDA.
- Just like the rest of the classes, the Engineer makes an appearance in Saints Row: The Third in the form of a wearable head mask.
- The song the Engineer plays during Meet the Engineer is titled "More Gun". More Gun is based on "Someone Else's Song", which was originally written by Jeff Tweedy and performed by the American Country band Wilco.
- A photograph on the Engineer update page displays a young boy (presumably the Engineer) trying on his first pair of goggles, as an adult Engineer (preumably Dell's father) looks on proudly and pats him on the shoulder.
- A large cutout of the Engineer makes an appearance in Worms Reloaded as part of a playable stage. Additionally, his hardhat and goggles are selectable hats for the player's worms.
- The Engineer's hardhat is wearable by the Support class of Monday Night Combat.
- In Poker Night at the Inventory, an image of the Engineer's disguise mask can be seen on the lower half of the Spy Jack of Diamonds cards in the "Poker Night" and the "Poker Night Alternative" decks, respectively.
- The Engineer, alongside the Pyro, Heavy, and Medic, is one of four Team Fortress 2-based Familiars in Dungeon Defenders.
- The Engineer's uniform is wearable by the Combat Girl in Super Monday Night Combat.
- The Engineer's uniform makes an appearance in Tiny Tower.
- The Engineer's surname is a tribute to the novel Conagher by Louis L'Amour, an author of whom Valve writers Erik Wolpaw and Jay Pinkerton are fans.[1]
- The Engineer was listed in the 2010 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records (Gamers Edition) as the most popular class in Team Fortress 2, with 15% choosing to play as him.
- Barik, a playable character in Paladins, has a skin based on the Engineer, which also adds new voice responses performed by Grant Goodeve.
