* Because [[damage]] dealt by Sentry Guns increases an Engineer's critical hit chance, an Engineer can earn a high crit rate without dealing much damage himself. This, combined with the crit rate on melee weapons ranging from 15% to 65%, leads to misconceptions about the Wrench's "unnaturally high" crit rate.

This article is about the default melee weapon for the Engineer. For other wrenches, see Wrench (disambiguation).

The Wrench, also known as the Uhlman Build-Matic Wrench, is the default melee weapon for the Engineer. It is a monkey wrench with an antique design.

The primary function of the Wrench is to upgrade (25 metal per swing or 50 metal per swing during Setup time) and repair (max 102 health repaired per swing, consuming 1 metal for every 3 health repaired) Dispensers, Teleporters, and Sentry Guns. In addition, while placed buildings construct themselves, striking them with the Wrench causes them to build 2.5 times faster. This effect is additive, with each consecutive swing increasing the build rate (up to almost double the default rate). Hitting buildings with the Wrench can also remove Sappers placed by enemy Spies.

Switching from this weapon to the Gunslinger destroys any existing Sentry Gun placed by the player. Similarly, switching to this weapon from the Gunslinger destroys the Gunslinger’s Combat Mini-Sentry Gun.
