Let's see how much blood's in ya!
The Sniper on bleed damage

The Tribalman's Shiv is a community-created melee weapon for the Sniper. It is a stylized kukri[1] composed of reddish wood with a curved edge in front and a serrated edge on its broad side.

The weapon deals 50% less damage than the Kukri, but causes the opponent to bleed and lose health for 6 seconds. Because of the reduced initial damage, direct contact with the opponent is not advised — the user should instead perform hit and run tactics to take down encroaching enemies like Spies that Cloak when attacked. The Tribalman's Shiv was the first weapon to feature the Bleeding effect.

This weapon inflicts a five-second bleed effect upon hitting an enemy. Missing the hit, however, applies the damage and bleed effect to the wearer instead; therefore, careful precision is required when attacking up close, particularly with the added risk from the Sniper's movement speed. The Tribalman's Shiv deals less self-damage compared to when hitting opponents, dealing 58 self-damage compared to 75.

The self-damage effect is not applied if the player hits a teammate or any solid object such as a wall, floor or prop. Missing with a critical swing causes the critical hit sound effect, though only normal damage is inflicted. While under the effects of a Medic's ÜberCharge, missing causes no damage to the player.

The kill icon for the Tribalman's Shiv was contributed by NeoDement.

This item was later contributed to the Steam Workshop, at Valve's request.

Trivia

  • Originally, the creator of the Shiv intended to make the viewmodel as it is now, but on a critical hit the knife would be turned so that the serrated edge would strike the enemy. This required custom animations which neither the creator nor Valve were willing to make. As a result, the animation was never implemented.[1]
  • The Tribalman's Shiv took approximately 7 and a half hours to make, from formulating the idea to submitting it.
  • The Sniper achievement Dead Reckoning can be earned by killing an enemy with bleeding after the player has died.
  • The Sniper achievement Shoot The Breeze can be earned by killing an enemy Spy with bleeding while the Spy is Cloaked.
