The Soldier on the culinary arts

The Frying Pan is a melee weapon for the Soldier and Demoman classes. It appears as a slightly worn cast-iron skillet with a thin film of grease caked onto the bottom.

The Frying Pan simply replaces the Shovel or Bottle without altering gameplay mechanics, similarly to what the Lugermorph is to the Pistol. Critical hit animations are identical to the default weapons, as are the taunts. Upon contact with a surface or player, it will play sounds identical to those used in Left 4 Dead 2.

This weapon was earned by players who purchased Left 4 Dead 2 before October 7, 2010 as part of the Sacrifice DLC.[1] Players also received Ellis' Cap as a part of this promotion.[1] Players who already have Left 4 Dead 2 were scheduled to receive both items in the upcoming days after the end of the October 4th promotion. Alternatively, The Frying Pan was also able to be gained through crafting, using both the melee slot token and the soldier or demo class token. As of the October 12th patch, Ellis' Cap and The Frying Pan are considered tradable, but this small patch has been reverted upon release. As the items are currently considered "Purchased", the items cannot actually be traded.

Previous Changes

It was possible to craft this weapon using the "Fabricate Class Weapons" blueprint before the ability to do so was disabled, making the Frying Pan the first promotional item that could be obtained without qualifying to receive it until it could be traded.

  • On The Sacrifice update page, the Soldier can be seen cooking maggots in the Frying Pan while the Scout, wearing Ellis' Hat, looks on. It appears the two classes are sitting in part of the map Viaduct.
  • A player who taunts while wielding the Frying Pan as a Demoman will perform the standard bottle taunt, flipping the Frying Pan into the air and drinking from the handle. And a player who taunts while wielding the Frying Pan as a Soldier will perform the Soldier's standard taunt, hitting himself on the head with the Frying Pan while screaming wildly.
