— The Engineer on manual punishment
|
” |
The Wrangler is an unlockable Pistol replacement for the Engineer. It is part of the Engineer Update and was announced on Day 2.
While selected, it allows the Engineer to take control of his Sentry Gun's aim from any distance, and the Sentry Gun stops aiming automatically. When the Engineer takes control, a laser sight is emitted from the Sentry Gun, used to aid the Engineer in aiming where the gun will fire, but also has the effect of allowing enemies to quickly ascertain where the Sentry Gun is located.
The Wrangler also gives the Sentry Gun a shield that absorbs 66% of incoming damage, doubles the gun's firing rate, and increases the missile launch rate at level 3. When switching to another weapon away from the Wrangler, the Sentry Gun is left defenseless for 3 seconds, after which time it will resume normal operation.
When using the Wrangler, the Sentry Gun's laser will auto-lock on (aim assist) to targets when you move your crosshairs near them.
The left mouse button fires the bullets, while the right mouse button fires rockets (Only with a level three Sentry Gun).
The Wrangler allows a clever Engineer to get to high places through the use of a Sentry Gun jump.

Trivia
- The Wrangler, as with the Frontier Justice, the Gunslinger, and the Southern Hospitality, appears to have been designed by Radigan Conagher, the Engineer's ancestor. This is shown by a hidden link in the Engineer Update
- The main component of the Wrangler bears a striking resemblance to the control pad of the Atari 2600.
- Humorously, the Engineer's hand appears to get cramps after rotating the Wrangler's joystick for a period of time.
- At this time, the laser emitted from the Sentry Gun while using the Wrangler will travel through some walls.
- A wrangled level 2 or 3 Sentry Gun can survive Taunt attacks that would normally destroy any building instantly (such as the Pyro's Hadouken or Soldier's Kamikaze).
- When being shot by your own Sentry Gun, the kill icon is still the Wrangler.
- But when killing yourself or an enemy with one of your own Sentry Gun rockets while using the Wrangler, the kill icon that appears is a level 3 Sentry Gun instead of the normal icon.
- Being stunned by the Sandman leaves the Engineer unable to fire, but keeps the Sentry Gun in the Wrangled state, effectively disabling it.
