Since disguises are only available through backstabs, the player cannot disguise at will using the Disguise Kit.
Taunting with Your Eternal Reward equipped allows the Spy to perform a deadly Fencing maneuver. Kills made will be silent and the victim's corpse will disappear. However, the disguise effect will not be activated even if the taunt hits the victim's back.

- Spies can now change their disguise weapon via 'lastdisguise' while using 'Your Eternal Reward'.
- Already-disguised Your Eternal Reward Spies are no longer forced to switch to displaying the melee weapon when they make a kill.
- Spies no longer play speech lines when making a kill with this weapon.
- Sentry Guns no longer track Your Eternal Reward Spies after they backstab someone.

Bugs
- Should the player die after switching Your Eternal Reward to the Knife, respawning may not be possible until they swap classes.
- Being auto-balanced or team-switched while holding Your Eternal Reward will cause the player to respawn with both the Disguise Kit and Your Eternal Reward equipped. Additionally, switching to the default Knife after switching teams once dead will result in the Disguise Kit being unavailable. These problems can be fixed upon death or accessing a Resupply locker.
- Should Your Eternal Reward be used to backstab an enemy who is then auto-balanced, the Spy will disguise as a friendly version of that class.
- Certain problems exist with the weapon when using DirectX 8; enemy bodies do not fade away when backstabbed, and the weapon is visible when the Spy is cloaked.
- Backstabbing anyone (who is not of the same class as the Spy's disguise) will occasionally disguise the Spy as that class holding their stock primary weapon instead of their currently equipped weapon.
- Additionally, backstabbing the person you are disguised as while they are holding their melee will occasionally cause your disguise's world model to become Your Eternal Reward.
- Backstabbing a disguised Spy using Your Eternal Reward will not give the achievement Counter Espionage.
- If a player raises the knife to stab and then switches their view to any world geometry, the knife will remain raised.[1]
- Carrying the Intelligence while disguised can still be performed upon acquiring it and backstabbing at the exact same time.[2]
- If a Spy backstabs an enemy with the Your Eternal Reward while undisguised and in line of sight of a Sentry Gun, the sentry will continue to fire at the Spy until the line of sight is lost.
- Backstabbing an enemy and being killed immediately thereafter will result in the disguise's alias, primary weapon and fake health being displayed on the HUD until the player respawns.
- Backstabbing an Engineer while he is hauling a Building will result in the killfeed displaying the Building's destruction to the enemy team.
Trivia
- Before the item was released, Robin Walker joked that Your Eternal Reward's drawback would be that it cannot facestab.[3]
- The name is a reference to a scene in the 1992 film Aladdin[4] where Jafar fools Aladdin with his disguise and then attempts to murder him with a dagger that Jafar refers to as "Your Eternal Reward."
- The entry's description in the Polycount Contest furthers this by mentioning the phrases "Phenominal [sic], Cosmic Power", and "Diamond in the Rough", all of which are used in the movie.
- Your Eternal Reward shares the identity theft ability with the Knife from the Half-Life 2 mod Template:W. However in Fortress Forever, the Spy retains his disguise ability, and must land a single backstab while already disguised in order to take on the disguise of his victim.
