Embargo publicity blurb

Embargo is a community-created Payload map released during the Summer 2024 Update. The map is set in Cuba, featuring a Payload track through the streets and the "Rojo's Casino", which plays music all throughout that can be faintly heard from outside. The map follows a strike team from the USA's (BLU team) efforts to deliver a bomb filled with paint (to dye the money and brazilium) to the center of El Comandante's lair, the fictitious dictator of Cuba, who sends his elite squad (RED team) to stop them.

This map features its own announcers: El Comandante (RED) and Agent 96 (BLU).

Embargo was contributed to the Steam Workshop.

Features

Embargo features a Payload cart that changes form throughout the map, being brought in by a helicopter at the start, then going from the standard Payload cart to inside the back of a truck. When the first checkpoint is captured, the Payload cart can be pushed into a truck's shipping container where it must be ridden via the platform behind it, similar to Li'l Chew-Chew from Frontier. When the third checkpoint is captured by BLU, the top of the container opens up, and the Payload cart is removed via an overhead crane before being placed back onto the track.

Robots

All around the interior of "Rojo's Casino" are small red robot butlers. They are harmless and are found exclusively in the casino area, and can be attacked and destroyed. Some of the robots can be found roaming around the casino floor on a set path with health kits on their trays. These health kits can be acquired by both teams, but the robots actively pursue injured RED players to deliver kits to, whereas BLU players are ignored. When picked up, the health kits respawn on their serving tray after 10 seconds and, if a robot is damaged, they either stop moving, roll in circles, or flee the player. When destroyed, they drop a health kit on the floor if carrying one and respawn after 25 seconds. Dropped kits despawn after 15 seconds.

Additionally, some robot butlers can be found roaming around out of bounds, as well as manning the various forms of gambling around the casino. When destroyed, they do not drop anything and respawn after 25 seconds (except for the robot butlers at the gambling tables, which never respawn).

Accompanying lines from the announcer play after a robot is destroyed depending on the player's team. If a player is standing in front of a robot, it rolls around them to get past.

Locations

Checkpoint A

  • BLU Spawn: An older stone building with three exits. A ramp leads down to the lowest exit directly to the cart's starting point, next to the ramp a second exit leading to the left side. A set of stairs leads up to the third exit, a balcony with a small overview of the starting area.
  • Cart start: The cart starts on a helicopter landing pad at the edge of a small cliff.
    • The cart is delivered via a helicopter at round start, and cannot be pushed until the helicopter has landed. The round timer does not begin counting down until this sequence is complete.
  • Cave: Next to BLU's first spawn, acting as a small flanking route.
  • Meta Lurgica: A large open building. A small bridge stretches above the cart's path, with small side rooms to each side of the building. A loading dock gate blocks the path until the cart reaches the ramp up to it.

Checkpoint B

  • BLU Truck: The cart leads into a small truck with a rideable platform that also acts as a BLU Dispenser on the back, similar to the cart from Frontier. The front of the truck provides cover, but is also difficult to see past. Unlike the regular cart, the truck does not reverse when left unmanned for too long.
  • Ropa Viena: To the right of the truck's starting point are a set of buildings containing health and ammo kits, with a set of stairs leading to the roof; this acts as a sightline, with the sign available as a form of cover.
  • Piexuxa: A small building that also contains BLU's second spawn. Stairs lead up to a pair of medium health and ammo kits, as well as a bridge that oversees checkpoint B.
  • Central Building: Left of the truck's starting point is a large spire. Inside are stairs leading up to the second floor, containing health and ammo kits, with a path leading directly to checkpoint B, or the bridge into Piexuxa.
  • Rojo's Casino: The casino has three entrances, with a closed door at the front up a set of stairs, and an opening to the right side that leads into RED's first spawn, though tanks will attempt to block the latter after the truck progresses far enough. The third entrance is at the checkpoint itself, but does not open until the truck reaches the checkpoint.

Checkpoint C

  • Casino Reception: A large open room, with two sets of stairs leading up to the second floor, and a door that remains closed until the truck approaches it. RED's first spawn opens up to be accessible by everyone, with the resupply lockers hidden away. Robots wander the room carrying medium health kits.
  • Main Lobby: An even larger room, with a chandelier and some planks acting as a bridge for the second floor. Two rooms on each floor are available to the back right; the lower containing shallow water, and the upper containing a betting table, as well as health and ammo kits. The room can also be entered from a corridor to the right of the room, of which also contains BLU's third spawn.

Once the point is captured, the cart is taken out of the truck and placed back onto the track, and will reverse if left unmanned for 30 seconds like before.

Checkpoint D

  • Balcony: A view from the second floor of where the cart leaves the truck, acting as a vantage point while looking down the cart's path. The balcony leads down to a catwalk.
  • Lava Plant: A small room to the left of the cart's path. It can be used as a shortcut to RED's base, with a small fence to provide cover.
  • Headquarters: The final checkpoint is contained in a large open room, with RED's second spawn directly infront of it. To both sides are raised areas, putting BLU at a disadvantage for the final push. After the checkpoint has been captured, the cart will create a non-damaging explosion that surrounds the area in blue-colored paint; players who are too close to the cart during this explosion will have their screens covered in a blue paint, of which does not disappear until the round resets.

July 25, 2024 Patch #1

  • Minor visual and clipping improvements.
  • Fixed the cart's missing outline.
  • Added an extra Botler to the playable space.
  • Fixed the paint splat overlay not applying to players within the explosion range.
  • The ambient music inside the casino now respects the music volume settings.
  • Improved player visibility against certain walls (Thanks Arthur).
  • Added the kill icon to the helicopter blades.
  • Fixed an override of a TF2's base texture.
  • Fixed being able to block the cart shortly after point A (Thanks Aar).

Bugs

  • Before the Payload cart is brought out from the helicopter, its hitbox and healing/ammo refill functionality is already present on the helipad.
  • When the Payload cart is being lifted from the truck back to the tracks after the third checkpoint, the particle effects and healing/ammo refill functionality stays inside the truck.
  • Health packs from the robot butlers are unaffected by health pack attributes, such as the one on the Back Scratcher.
  • If the health pack from a robot butler is picked up, walking into it immediately after can heal the player for a second time.
  • Stickybombs can get stuck between the vertical-opening doors at the casino.[1]

Trivia

  • There is a missing persons poster of a health inspector in the "Ropa Vieja" restaurant. In BLU's second spawn, the kitchen of the "Peixuxa Restaurante", the same missing poster is crossed out with blue paint. Not far from that poster is a severed hand next to a notepad and pencil commonly associated with health inspectors.
