The Gunslinger is an unlockable melee weapon for the Engineer. It is a robotic hand, comprised of segmented finger parts, wires and a pressure gauge.
+

The device serves as a deadly weapon, granting the Engineer 25 max health (raising total health to 150) to promote offensive play at the cost of no random Critical hits. Additionally, the player is able to perform a three part combo attack on enemies. Should an enemy be hit three times in succession, the third strike with the fist will become an automatic Critical hit. This does not need to be performed on a single enemy, but the correct bound key cannot be released during the combo or it will be lost and reset.

The Critical hit animation for the Gunslinger is a downward punch swing, after which the hand will jerk and produce a mechanical twitching noise before resuming the normal idle animation. The Critical hit animation will also play when attacking friendly players and when building/upgrading your own buildings.
+
The Gunslinger is an unlockable melee weapon for the Engineer. It is a robotic prosthetic hand which replaces the Engineer's right hand. The hand features a gauge connected through a cable to the palm on the left side, a rip-cord right next to the gauge, and two exhaust pipes on the right side. The team-colored wrist features three buttons on the underside, as well as two cables that connect it to a keypad strapped around the Engineer's forearm. The keypad has a round, team-colored button below the keys and a team-colored light where the cables connect to it.

Using the Gunslinger allows the Engineer to build a Combat Mini-Sentry Gun instead of the standard Sentry Gun. A Mini-sentry takes only 2.5 seconds to build, costs only 100 metal and fires 50% faster. However, it cannot be upgraded or repaired, and only deals 50% damage per shot compared to a normal level 1 Sentry Gun.
+
The Gunslinger grants the Engineer an additional 25 maximum health, raising his total health to 150, at the cost of disabling random Critical hits with the weapon. However, the player is able to perform a three-part combo attack on enemies. Should the player score 3 melee hits with a maximum of 1 second between punches, the third punch (a swift downward motion with a clenched fist) scores a guaranteed Critical hit which is capable of casting the victim's ragdoll a considerable distance away. Any missed punch or waiting longer than 1 second resets the combo. However, as long as there is no miss and no pause in the attacks, whether all three punches hit the same target, two different targets, or three different targets, the third hit scores a guaranteed Critical hit on whichever enemy player is hit.<!-- Prior to the October 20, 2017 Patch #1, it used to be that holding down the attack key would "store" the third hit crit until the player managed to hit an enemy; missing did not reset the third hit crit. -->

Taunting with the Gunslinger will perform the Organ Grinder taunt kill.
+
Even though this weapon does not deal random Critical hits, the Gunslinger can be Crit boosted by regular means; but being a body location, it does not glow when Crit boosted. Similarly to the Fists, the fingers only show sparks to indicate the Crit boost.

Equipping the Wrench or the Southern Hospitality will destroy all existing Buildings.
+
Using the Gunslinger replaces the Engineer's standard Sentry Gun with a Combat Mini-Sentry Gun. The Mini-Sentry builds, rotates, and fires much faster than the standard Sentry Gun; however, it cannot be upgraded, and each shot deals lower damage compared to that of a standard Level 1 Sentry Gun. The gibs from a destroyed Combat Mini-Sentry Gun do not grant the Engineer any metal when picked up.

 +
Switching to a different melee weapon destroys the Combat Mini-Sentry Gun, if it is built. Similarly, switching to the Gunslinger from a different melee weapon causes the original Sentry Gun to be destroyed, if built, regardless of upgrade progress.

*Before being patched on July 9, 2010, it was possible to build a Sentry Gun with the Wrench, upgrade it to Level 2 or 3, then switch to the Gunslinger and move it, becoming a Mini-Sentry at the same level. This otherwise impossible level 3 Mini-Sentry dealt the normal proportional damage (75% damage), even with its rockets. The flashing light effect would remain despite the light itself being absent on the Level 2 or 3 model, and the upgraded Mini-Sentry was always displayed as RED, regardless of its actual team.
+
Medic
**The above exploit was still possible by equipping the Wrench, readying the toolbox to put down a Sentry Gun and then using the loadout menu and a resupply cabinet to switch to the Gunslinger. The deployed Sentry Gun would still be the upgradable one the Wrench uses, which could then be hauled and redeployed into a Mini-Sentry. This version of the exploit was patched on July 13, 2010.

Say you have two things: a perfectly good hand, and a brilliant inventor for a grandfather. One day you stumble across a blueprint for an amazing-as-hell robot hand meant to replace an arm-stump. Wait, you have three things: the hand, the grandfather, and a saw.
— Blog post introducing the Gunslinger[1]

The Gunslinger is an unlockable melee weapon for the Engineer. It is a robotic prosthetic hand which replaces the Engineer's right hand. The hand features a gauge connected through a cable to the palm on the left side, a rip-cord right next to the gauge, and two exhaust pipes on the right side. The team-colored wrist features three buttons on the underside, as well as two cables that connect it to a keypad strapped around the Engineer's forearm. The keypad has a round, team-colored button below the keys and a team-colored light where the cables connect to it.

The Gunslinger grants the Engineer an additional 25 maximum health, raising his total health to 150, at the cost of disabling random Critical hits with the weapon. However, the player is able to perform a three-part combo attack on enemies. Should the player score 3 melee hits with a maximum of 1 second[2] between punches, the third punch (a swift downward motion with a clenched fist) scores a guaranteed Critical hit which is capable of casting the victim's ragdoll a considerable distance away. Any missed punch or waiting longer than 1 second resets the combo. However, as long as there is no miss and no pause in the attacks, whether all three punches hit the same target, two different targets, or three different targets, the third hit scores a guaranteed Critical hit on whichever enemy player is hit.

Even though this weapon does not deal random Critical hits, the Gunslinger can be Crit boosted by regular means; but being a body location, it does not glow when Crit boosted. Similarly to the Fists, the fingers only show sparks to indicate the Crit boost.

Switching to a different melee weapon destroys the Combat Mini-Sentry Gun, if it is built. Similarly, switching to the Gunslinger from a different melee weapon causes the original Sentry Gun to be destroyed, if built, regardless of upgrade progress.

Taunting with the Gunslinger equipped results in the Arm Blender kill taunt.

The Gunslinger is automatically given to any player who obtains 11 Engineer achievements.

Unused content

Bugs

An Engineer holding both the Southern Hospitality and the Gunslinger at once.
The Gunslinger using Engineer's glove viewmodel.
 • Weapon switching glitches can occur with the Gunslinger and any Wrench, which creates a glitched client view model of the Gunslinger holding the selected Wrench at the same time (which should be impossible as they are both melee weapons, and thus could not be used together). It is also possible for the Gunslinger to appear as the Engineer's default glove.
 • The right-hand gib of the gibbed Gunslinger-wearing Engineer still shows his regular glove.
 • If an ÜberCharge is deployed on the Engineer using the Gunslinger, it shows a wrong skin position of the invulnerable Engineer.
 • If the player dies with the Gunslinger as the active weapon, they do not drop a weapon or ammo on death.
 • If connection to the item server is lost while equipped with the Gunslinger, the Engineer's right arm becomes invisible on all weapons.
 • Occasionally, the Gunslinger does not load in-game and the melee weapon slot goes missing. This glitch can be fixed by switching to a wrench of any kind.
 • If the player has the Short Circuit and the Gunslinger both equipped, the two items may sometimes glitch and show a distorted Engineer hand when first deployed.
 • If the player has a killstreak primary or secondary weapon equipped, the sheen on the weapon also shows up on the Gunslinger while the weapon is deployed.
 • After equipping the Gunslinger, if a player walks outside of spawn, equips a different Wrench, takes out a Mini-Sentry, does not place it, and goes to a resupply cabinet while still holding the Combat Mini-Sentry Gun, they switch to a new wrench, but have the ability to still place the Combat Mini-Sentry Gun.

Trivia

 • The Gunslinger, along with the Frontier Justice, the Wrangler, and the Southern Hospitality, appears to have been designed by Radigan Conagher, the Engineer's grandfather. This is shown via a hidden link on the Engineer Update page.
 • The Critical hit animation for the Gunslinger is a punch being swung downward. After playing the Critical hit animation, and if left idle, the Gunslinger jerks and produces a mechanical twitching noise, before resuming the normal idle animation. This is only a visual effect.
 • The Gunslinger shares traits with the P.D.Q., an Engineer weapon from the closed beta. Both items share the ability to construct non-upgradable Sentry Guns in a shorter time span than normal. In contrast, the Gunslinger's 4x construction rate for the Mini-Sentry beats the P.D.Q.'s 1.5x construction rate for all buildings.
 • The term "gunslinger" is used to refer to a person, commonly in the American Old West, who was dangerous and skilled with a gun.
 • The concept of a robot arm item was added based on community feedback of the background blueprints in the Engineer Update teaser trailer.[3]
 • A promotional advertisement featured for Brütal Legend shows the Gunslinger second to the left.
