The Bat is the default melee weapon for the Scout. It is an aluminium baseball bat sporting a rubber tape grip, a faded green oval label, and a large dent on its side.
The Bat does less damage per hit than any other stock melee weapon aside from the Knife, but swings 37.5% faster. It does one-third of the Scattergun's damage at point blank range. Players may choose to use this weapon to finish off an opponent when out of ammunition, while reloading, or simply for additional humiliation. Its critical hit animation depicts the Scout swinging it backhandedly.

Trivia
- During the Team Fortress 2 Beta, a team-colored label was displayed on the Bat. Upon release, the label was changed to a faded green for both teams. This can still be seen in the weapon's bucket icons.
- The bat is made of aluminium. The first aluminium baseball bat was made in the 1970s, at least two years after this game ostensibly takes place.
- It was possible to receive a level 0 stock Bat as an item drop due to a glitch with Valve item drop servers. This happened because the server forgot what item it was supposed to give, so it chose the first weapon, quality, and level in the catalog: a level 0 stock Bat.
