Gentleman, find that Australium and today we make history!
The Administrator

Special Delivery is a Game mode added in the Pyromania update. The objective for both teams is to take a neutral briefcase to a specified area of the map, while preventing the other team from doing so. It is essentially a combination of Capture The Flag and Payload. The intelligence of Capture The Flag is replaced with an Australium Payload that either team can take 45 seconds after the start of a round. But once taken, the Australium becomes property of that team: if the carrier is killed, it is dropped and can only be picked up by the same team. If the case is defended for its return duration of 45 seconds, however, it will return to its original location and become neutral again, allowing either team to take it.

In place of the Payload Cart is a loading platform or other slow-moving object. Only the team with the Australium can make the platform operate. The loading platform does not increase or decrease speed depending on the number of teammates on the platform. Only the teammate with the Australium can move the platform. If the Australium is dropped or the Australium leaves the platform, however, the platform retreats. Once the platform reaches the top of the rocket, a compartment on the nose of the rocket will open. The team that places the Australium in this compartment will launch the rocket, winning the game. Note that once the Australium compartment is open, the platform no longer needs to be raised in order to launch the rocket. As long as a player is able to make contact with the compartment, the rocket will launch.

Update history

June 27, 2012 Patch (Pyromania Update)

  • Added new game mode Special Delivery and map Doomsday!

Bugs

  • If a team drops the Australium, the Administrator may sometimes refer to it as the intelligence, as if playing a Capture the Flag map.
  • The end-of-game win announcement says "RED/BLU successfully defended until time ran out", despite the objective being offensive and there being no time limit.

Trivia

  • The Australium resembles the original backpack icon, with extra metallic items attached to it, such as the Australium bar itself.
  • Noclipping through the back of the blue base will reveal a Blu Soldier guarding a door labeled "top secret". Noclipping past the door reveals the Spy looking at a map (with the file name "doomsday map"). Three locales are visible on the map, and the labels on are mostly indecipherable, but the second word of one is titled "valley". These hint at new maps.
  • Behind the Spy are blurry pictures of classes with some robotic characteristics. Hidden head files of robot classes have also been added in the new update, confirming the "robot update".
  • It's not necessary to be on the lift to put the Australium into the Rocket once the compartment is open. A Soldier or a Demoman can Rocket jump/Stickybomb jump to the top of the Rocket and still complete the objective, a Scout can also use a Triple jump to reach the rocket from the wooden platform in front of the rocket.
  • There are two possible endings to the rocket launch. Sometimes it may be launched successfully, and the match will end. However, other times, the rocket will crash, and the Announcer will say Poopy Joe was taken too soon or that this never happened.
