— The Scout after generating hype
|
” |
The Soda Popper is a community-created primary weapon for the Scout. It is a broken Force-A-Nature repaired with several black bands and outfitted with slitted barrels. A can of Crit-a-Cola is fitted underneath.
The weapon reloads 25% faster than the stock Scattergun and offers 50% faster firing speed. However, the capacity is reduced to only two shells at a time. Like the Force-A-Nature, the reload will replace both shells even when one shell is still available in the ammunition reserve, and the second shot is wasted.
In addition, equipping the Soda Popper places a "hype" meter on the HUD, which fills whilst the player is moving with the weapon active. It takes approximately 5200 Hammer units of distance traveled, either through running or jumping, to fill up the hype meter (The Scout has a base movement speed of approximately 400 Hammer Units a second, so filling up the meter will take about 13 seconds of constant movement).
When the meter is full, pressing Alt-Fire (default key: MOUSE2) activates Hype mode for 10 seconds, giving the Scout the ability to jump up to five times in mid-air (for a total of six jumps) and also adding a bright purple glow to the Scout's active weapon. When Hype mode is initiated, the player will hear the same noise as being hit with the Disciplinary Action. The Atomizer has no effect during Hype mode; it will not grant an additional jump or damage the user.

Bugs
- The Hype meter can be charged and activated during end of round humiliation time.
- On 4:3 resolutions, the Hype meter will overlap the objective HUD.
- Equipping the Soda Popper along with the Atomizer will cause the multi-jump sound effect to play on triple jump, even though the Hype Mode is not activated.
- When viewed in the class selection screen, a shell can be seen behind the Crit-a-Cola portion of the Soda Popper.
Trivia
- The shells have the radiation hazard symbol (☢) on them. [2]
- Although a can of Crit-a-Cola is strapped to the barrel, a Bonk! Atomic Punch is required instead in the crafting recipe. While coincidental, early versions of the Soda Popper had a can of Bonk! Atomic Punch strapped to the barrel.
