The Scout

The Soda Popper is a primary weapon for the Scout. It is a broken Force-A-Nature repaired with several black bands and outfitted with slitted barrels. A can of Crit-a-Cola is attached underneath.

The weapon offers 25% faster reloading speed and 50% faster firing speed compared to the default Scattergun. However, it is restricted to loading only two shots at a time, and it is incapable of delivering random critical hits.

In addition, equipping the Soda Popper places a "hype" meter on the HUD, which charges whilst the player is moving with the weapon in use. It takes approximately 5200 Hammer units of distance traveled, either through running or jumping, to fill up the hype meter. It does not charge, however, when the Scout is on moving map objects such as a Payload cart. When the meter is full, all weapons will automatically deal mini-crits for 8 seconds.

The Soda Popper does not share the increased positive damage ramp of the Force-A-Nature and the Scattergun; its maximum ramp-up is only 150% as opposed to 175%.

Update history

June 23, 2011 Patch (Über Update)

  • The Soda Popper was added to the game.

June 27, 2011 Patch

  • Fixed a problem that prevented the new Scout items from being used in crafting recipes.

  • Added/Refined recoil/draw/crit/reload forces for all of the new weapons in the Uber Update

Bugs

  • In first person view, the Scout's right hand clips through the black bands of the weapon.
  • On 4:3 resolutions, the Hype meter will overlap the objective HUD.
  • When used on itemtest, this weapon has the Scattergun's rate of fire and clip size. As a result of this, every single shell loaded uses the Soda Popper's reload animation, resulting in a very slow reload.
  • If a Scout with the Soda Popper's Hype meter filled dies and switches to a Banner wielding Soldier, the Soldier will spawn with the Rage meter filled.
  • If a Scout with a full Hype meter uses "Bonk! Atomic Punch", the meter will empty along with the drink meter.

Trivia

  • The shells appear to have the Radiation Template:W (☢) on them.[1]
  • Although a can of Crit-a-Cola is strapped to the barrel, a Bonk! Atomic Punch is required instead in the crafting recipe. While coincidental, early versions of the Soda Popper had a can of Bonk! Atomic Punch strapped to the barrel.
  • Much like the Force-A-Nature, the reload will replace both shells even when one shell is still available in the ammunition reserve, and the second shot is wasted.
