The Sharpened Volcano Fragment is a promotional melee weapon for the Pyro. It is an obsidian axe with glowing lava flowing along the blade's extreme edges.

This weapon deals 20% less damage than the standard Fire Axe but ignites enemies upon contact. The afterburn applied to affected enemies lasts for up to 7.5 seconds.

This item was awarded in Genuine quality to players who pre-ordered RIFT on Steam before March 1, 2011.

February 7, 2011 Patch

Fixed burning deaths to always use the death notice icon for the weapon that started the burn.
Updated the burn effect from the Pyro's Sharpened Volcano Fragment to only last for a limited time on enemies.
Updated the RIFT pre-order items to be not-tradable until the RIFT pre-order period is over.

February 14, 2011 Patch

Fixed melee attacks not destroying remote detonation pipes (Stickybombs).

March 1, 2011 Patch

Updated the Sharpened Volcano Fragment and the Sun-on-a-Stick so they can be traded.

The crafting cost of the Sharpened Volcano Fragment was changed from 1 Refined metal, a Powerjack, and a Degreaser to 2 Reclaimed Metal and an Axtinguisher.
All Sharpened Volcano Fragments crafted before this patch were upgraded to Vintage quality.

[Undocumented] The damage penality attribute was changed from "-20% damage done" to "-20% damage penalty".
