— The Medic on saws with needles
|
” |
The Vita-Saw (/vaɪtɑːsɔː/ veye-tah-saw) is a community-created melee weapon for the Medic. It is a rusty gas pump handle that has been outfitted with both a long needle and blood-stained knife underneath, and with a container connected to the top of the main part of the weapon, filled with a team-colored liquid with a slight glow to it. A small skull and bones symbol, coupled with eight tally marks, has been etched into the flat of the blade.
When equipped, this weapon lowers the Medic's maximum health by 10 to a total of 140. On the other hand, this weapon has a unique feature that can allow the player to retain up to 60% of an ÜberCharge after respawning. Every hit against an enemy using the Vita-Saw "collects" their organs, adding 15% to the retained ÜberCharge up to a maximum of 60%, after which additional hits will not change the retained ÜberCharge amount. Unlike the Ubersaw, ÜberCharge gained from hits are not usable until after the player dies and respawns.
The ÜberCharge stored will be kept if the player switches teams, but will be lost if they change classes. The Vita-Saw stores charge upon death, and therefore the Medic can use a different melee weapon while building charge or even change melee loadout while respawning. So long as he dies with it equipped and doesn't change classes, the Medic will respawn with his previous ÜberCharge percentage to the maximum limit of 60%. An ÜberCharge is always lost when a round ends (when the objective of the game is met; i.e. all points in a map are captured).
Similar to the Ubersaw, the vial will fill up with a team-colored liquid as an ÜberCharge is built and drain as it is deployed.
The kill icon for the Vita-Saw was contributed by Psyke .
This item was later contributed to the Steam Workshop, at Valve's request.

Update history
- The Vita-Saw was added to the game.
- [Undocumented] Gave the Vita-Saw a unique crafting recipe.
- Taunting with the Vita-Saw now plays the old Ubersaw taunt - a deeper viola tone. Previously it shared a taunt with the Bonesaw.[1]
- The mesh's smoothing groups were fixed resulting in clean, hard-edged look as opposed to the molten appearance it had before.
- [Undocumented] The Vita-Saw was added in the crafting blueprint for the Amputator.
- The Vita-Saw was given a unique kill icon.
- Fixed melee attacks not destroying remote detonation pipes (Stickybombs).
- The crafting cost of the Vita-Saw was changed from 2 Reclaimed Metal and a Ubersaw to 2 Scrap Metal and a Ubersaw.
- The crafting cost of the Amputator was changed from 1 Reclaimed Metal and a Vita-Saw to 1 Scrap Metal and a Vita-Saw.
- Fixed the Vita-Saw not displaying the Medic's ÜberCharge progress.
- Added Collector's quality.
- Fixed the Vitasaw(sic) no longer giving its ÜberCharge bonus after death.
October 20, 2017 Patch (Jungle Inferno Update)
- Changed attributes:
- Added Organs collecting concept. Each hit with the Vita-Saw harvests the victim's organs. Preserves 15% ubercharge(sic) per Organ harvested on-death. Effect caps at 60% total ubercharge.
Trivia
- This weapon was originally created by Nare (model) and Daimao (texture) as a replacement for the Ubersaw, hence its similarities to it. Community user Pie_Tony made an alternative texture for the weapon, but this was not used in the final version.
- Due to this weapon's strong resemblance to the ADAM Harvester from the BioShock series (seen to the right), Valve requested and subsequently received permission from 2K Games to include it in Team Fortress 2.
- The connection to BioShock is further reinforced in the name, which is a reference to the Vita-Chambers from Bioshock. The Vita-Saw and Vita-Chambers even share similar functions. In BioShock, the Vita-Chambers respawn the player with a portion of their health and EVE, the energy used to perform abilities. Similarly, the Vita-Saw will respawn the player with a portion of their ÜberCharge after death.
- Due to copyright reasons, this item is not sold in the Mann Co. Store.
- The original name of the weapon model was the Gentzücken Battle Needle before being officially added to the game.
- On the April 14, 2011 Patch, the Vita-Saw was going to have the ability to see enemy health added, similar to the Solemn Vow; this was quickly edited out.
- The Vita-Saw's taunt sound was originally used by the Uber Saw while it used the Bone Saw taunt before it was given the Spinal Tap taunt.
