Did that sting? Saw-ry!
The Medic on saws with needles

The Vita-Saw (/vaɪtɑːsɔː/ veye-tah-saw) is a community-created melee weapon for the Medic. It is a rusty gas pump handle that has been outfitted with both a long needle and blood-stained knife underneath, and with a liquid-filled container connected to the top of the main part of the weapon. A small skull and bones symbol, coupled with eight tally marks, has been etched into the flat of the blade.

When equipped, this weapon lowers the Medic's maximum health by 10 to a total of 140. On the other hand, it will allow the player to retain up to 20% of an ÜberCharge after respawning. For example, dying with a 12% charge will cause the Medic to retain the 12% charge upon respawning, while dying with a charge of more than 20%, such as 45% of a full charge, will only retain a maximum of 20%. The retention will occur even if an ÜberCharge is deployed as long as the remaining charge does not deplete below 20%.

The ÜberCharge stored will be kept if the player switches teams, but will be lost if they change classes. The Vita-Saw stores charge upon death, and therefore the Medic can use a different melee weapon while building charge or even change melee loadout while respawning. So long as he dies with it equipped and doesn't change classes, the Medic will respawn with his previous ÜberCharge percentage to the maximum limit of 20%. An ÜberCharge is always lost when the round ends.

Similar to the Übersaw, the vial will fill up with a team-colored liquid as an ÜberCharge is built and drain as it is deployed.

Bugs

  • If the Medic dies during an ÜberCharge, it's possible for the ÜberCharge meter to read 19% upon spawning. This is likely a rounding error, or the result of the charge being depleted slightly after it gets reduced to 20%.

Trivia

The ADAM Harvester from Bioshock.
  • This weapon was originally created by IdleTard (model) and Daimao (texture) as a replacement for the Übersaw, hence its similarities to it. Community user Pie_Tony made an alternative texture for the weapon, but this was not used in the final version.
  • Due to this weapon's strong resemblance to the ADAM Harvester from the Bioshock series (seen to the right), Valve requested and subsequently received permission from 2K Games to include it in Team Fortress 2.
    • The connection to Bioshock is further reinforced in the name, a reference to the Vita-Chambers from Bioshock. The Vita-Saw and Vita-Chambers even share similar functions. In Bioshock, the Vita-Chambers respawn the player with a portion of their health and EVE, the energy used to perform abilities. Similarly, the Vita-Saw will respawn the player with a portion of their ÜberCharge after death.
    • Due to copyright reasons, this item is not sold in the Mann Co. Store.
  • The original name of the weapon model was the Gentzücken Battle Needle before being officially added to the game.
