Here's a chilling Halloween tale: Once upon a time, an innocent evil wizard named Merasmus bought a circus for $12000, hoping to flip it and make a fortune! Alas, he did not have $12,000, but do you know who did? The Japanese Mafia! But, due to a language barrier, Merasmus was unclear about the frankly punitive interest rates! Now, he is looking for a bunch of freaks willing to kill people, and he is eager to provide powers capable of rivaling gods in exchange of money...
Freaky Fair publicity blurb

Freaky Fair is a community-created Control Point map released during the Scream Fortress 2024 update. The map features two team-oriented capture points and one central neutral point, as well as an Upgrade Station with 250 starting credits. The Upgrade Station shares mostly the same upgrades as Mann vs. Machine, with changes to the Power Up Canteen upgrades and some regular upgrades.

Freaky Fair was contributed to the Steam Workshop.

Upgrade changes

  • All Power Up Canteen upgrades have been replaced with a set of alternate "Potions".
  • The resistance upgrades have been reduced from +25% to +20%.[1]
  • The Fire Resistance upgrade costs 300 instead of 150 credits.[2]
  • The Gas Passer's Explode on Ignite upgrade is not available.[3]
  • The Thermal Thruster's "Stun enemies when you land" upgrade costs 600 instead of 300 credits.[4]
  • The Medic's Projectile Shield upgrade costs 500 instead of 300 credits and only has 1 level.[5]
  • Medic's Canteen Specialist upgrade is not available.[6]
  • Spy's sappers cannot be upgraded.[7]
  • Spy's melee weapons do not have the Armor Penetration upgrade.[8]
  • The Crits on Kill duration for Spy and Demoman's melee weapons has been reduced to +1 second instead of 2.[9]
  • There are 4 levels of Disposable Sentry instead of 1.[10]

Potions

  • Kritz Potion: Grants Critical hits. Lasts 10 seconds and costs 400 credits.[11]
  • Über Potion: Grants ÜberCharge. Lasts 10 seconds and costs 400 credits.[12]
  • Giant Potion: The user doubles in size and their max health is multiplied by 10. Lasts 10 seconds and costs 300 credits.[13]
  • Healing Potion: Same effect as the Overheal magic spell. Costs 200 credits.[14]
  • Ghost Potion: Turns the user into a ghost. Lasts 10 seconds and costs 200 credits.[15]
  • Refill Ammo Potion: Refills the user's ammo to full. Costs 50 credits.[16]
  • Pumpkin Buster Potion: Turns the user into a miniature Sentry Buster with a pumpkin head. Pressing the primary fire button (default key: MOUSE1) causes the user to detonate, dealing 5000 damage to players and buildings in range. Lasts 15 seconds and costs 300 credits.[17]
  • Roll the Dice Potion: Grants one of several random effects. Costs 150 credits. The possible effects are:
    • Bumper kart: The user is put into a Bumper Car for 10 seconds.[18]
    • Unaffected by damage: The user has a 75% chance to dodge sources of incoming damage for 10 seconds.[19]
    • Marked For Death: The user is Marked for Death and receives 35% more damage from all incoming sources for 10 seconds.[20]
    • Frozen stiff: The user is unable to move for 5 seconds.[21]
    • Low gravity: The user's gravity is decreased for 10 seconds.[22]
    • Reverse gravity: The user's gravity is inverted for 10 seconds.[23]
    • 1000 health: Max health is set to 1000 for 10 seconds, after which the remaining health is treated as overheal and begins to decay over time.[24]
    • 1 health: Max health is set to 1.[25]
    • Overpowered: The user's health and ammo are refilled and they are Crit boosted and ÜberCharged for 10 seconds [26]
    • Respawned: Teleports the user back to spawn.[27]
    • Speed bonus: Grants a speed boost for 15 seconds.[28]
    • Mini-Crits: Grants a Mini-Crit boost for 10 seconds.[29]
    • Midas touch: For 10 seconds, any enemy killed by the user turns into a golden statue.[30]

Locations

  • Spawn Room: Players spawn on a lower ground right in front of the Upgrade Station, with a nearby exit to the left and a farther exit to the right. A red "Refund" button can be shot or hit to instantly reset any upgrades the player has purchased while receiving the credits they have spent back, and a resupply cabinet can be found near it.
  • Team's Point: Each team's point sits in a summoning circle on a team-colored square board.
  • Spawn Roof: The spawn's roof serves as a balcony overlooking the entire area of the team's point. It can be easily accessed through a flight of stairs just outside the left spawn exit, which also offers a small corridor that serves as cover.
  • Shops: An elevated area in the point's area on the opposite side of the Spawn Roof which also overlooks the team's point. The RED side features a burger shop and some picnic tables, while the BLU side features a spiral slide.
  • Team's Building: A large building that separates the team's bases from the center point's area. It has two floors, with the second floor being split into two disconnected parts, two doorways to the center point's area, and three doorways to the team's point (two are signaled with a "CONTROL POINT" sign, while the third one is through a corridor beneath the Shops).
  • Center Point: The central area of the map. The point sits right in the middle, in-between two shacks with team-colored roofs.
  • Train Tracks: Elevated platforms on opposite sides of the center point with a set of train tracks which offer an overview of the entire area.
  • BLU Ferris Wheel & RED Merry-Go-Round: Large attractions seen outside the playable area that can be used as points of reference. A medium health kit and ammo pack can also be found near each.

Update history

October 10, 2024 Patch #1 (Scream Fortress 2024)

  • Added Freaky Fair to the game.

Unused content

  • There is an unused upgrade that would increase the user's melee range.[31]

Bugs

  • The light posts on the teams' bases lack any collision.[32]

Notes

  • The Upgrade Station retains the tips for Mann vs. Machine, such as "Upgrade your knife to pierce through giant robot armor."
  • Developer textures can be found on building walls both outside and beneath the playable area.

Trivia

  • This map's unique feature, the Upgrade Station, was inspired by Deadlock, which features in-game upgrades.[33]
  • The models for the Pumpkin Buster Potion can be found stored inside one of the shops on the RED side of the map.
  • A wooden deer cutout can be found "climbing" a ladder outside the playable area of the BLU point.
