The Medic

The Vita-Saw is a findable melee weapon for the Medic class. It appears as a rusty gas pump handle outfitted with a long needle and a blood-stained knife under the needle. Connected on top is a liquid-filled container. A small skull and bones symbol, coupled with eight tally marks, has been scratched into the flat of the blade.

When equipped, this weapon lowers the Medic's max health by 10 to a total of 140. On the other hand, it will allow the player to retain up to 20% of the ÜberCharge meter if they were to die. For example, dying with 12% will respawn a Medic with 12%, while dying with 45% will let him keep 20%. The retention will occur even if an ÜberCharge is deployed, as long as the remaining charge does not deplete below 20%. The ÜberCharge stored will be kept if the player changes teams, but will be lost if they were to change class.

Similar to the Übersaw, the vial will fill up with a team coloured liquid as an ÜberCharge is built, before draining as it is deployed.

Trivia

  • This weapon was originally created by Pie_Tony, Daimao, and IdleTard as a replacement for the Übersaw, hence its similarities to it.
  • It very closely resembles the large needle syringe carried around by the Little Sisters from the game BioShock. Its name is also similar to the Vita-Chamber, a device which resurrects individuals who die in their vicinity, from the same game. Whether this was a reference made by Valve or a coincidence is not known.
  • It was originally named the "Gentztuckin Battle Needle", evidence of this is in the folders where it is still named "Battleneedle"; it was a skin available through a skin thread of http://www.facepunch.com/.
  • Incidentally, Valve had to contact 2K Games for their legal consent to be able to ship the model in-game, due to its resemblance to the ADAM Syringe Little Sisters use in Bioshock.
  • This weapon houses the possible in-joke of Medic being a Little Sister and Heavy being the Big Daddy. The stats of the weapon help this claim by making the Medic a little more dependent on a teammate due to lower health.
  • The liquid within the vial on the back is jiggleboned, which means that it will swirl around in the vial as the Medic moves.
  • The Vita-Saw is randomly available through Mann Co. Supply Crates which are dropped in game by drop system, as well as through regular random item drops.
  • The Vita-Saw's design seems to be an amalgam of the Medic's Übersaw, Syringe Gun (barrel), and the Medic's beta needle weapon.
  • Currently, the Vita-Saw has the same taunt as the Bonesaw, where he plays the weapon like a violin. Due to the needle, it appears as though he is stabbing himself in the neck.
  • This is the latest weapon to be awarded to the Medic since his original update.
  • This is one of several weapons released in the Mann-Conomy Update that lacks a unique kill icon.
    • This is also the only one not to use an icon from another weapon, instead using the environmental hazard icon.
