Did that sting? Saw-ry!
The Medic on saws with needles

The Vita-Saw (/vaɪtɑːsɔː/ veye-tah-saw) is a community-created melee weapon for the Medic. It is a rusty gas pump handle that has been outfitted with both a long needle and blood-stained knife underneath, and with a container connected to the top of the main part of the weapon, filled with a team-colored liquid with a slight glow to it. A small skull and bones symbol, coupled with eight tally marks, has been etched into the flat of the blade.

When equipped, this weapon lowers the Medic's maximum health by 10 to a total of 140. On the other hand, this weapon has a unique feature that can allow the player to retain up to 60% of an ÜberCharge after respawning. Every hit against an enemy using the Vita-Saw "collects" their organs, adding 15% to the retained ÜberCharge up to a maximum of 60%, after which additional hits will not change the retained ÜberCharge amount. Unlike the Ubersaw, ÜberCharge gained from hits are not usable until after the player dies and respawns.

The ÜberCharge stored will be kept if the player switches teams, but will be lost if they change classes. The Vita-Saw stores charge upon death, and therefore the Medic can use a different melee weapon while building charge or even change melee loadout while respawning. So long as he dies with it equipped and doesn't change classes, the Medic will respawn with his previous ÜberCharge percentage to the maximum limit of 60%. An ÜberCharge is always lost when a round ends (when the objective of the game is met; i.e. all points in a map are captured).

Similar to the Ubersaw, the vial will fill up with a team-colored liquid as an ÜberCharge is built and drain as it is deployed.

The kill icon for the Vita-Saw was contributed by Psyke .

This item was later contributed to the Steam Workshop, at Valve's request.

Bugs

  • The "Organs" display overlaps with the "Energy" Upgrade display in Mann vs. Machine on the HUD.
  • Due to Lag compensation, The "Organs" counter may display the incorrect number of organs, This is shown here.
  • Firing any primary weapons and switching to the Vita-Saw before the projectile hit with the enemy will cause an organ to spawn from them when the projectile hits them. This is merely visual and does not go towards to the organ counts.

Trivia

The ADAM Harvester from BioShock.
  • This weapon was originally created by Nare (model) and Daimao (texture) as a replacement for the Ubersaw, hence its similarities to it. Community user Pie_Tony made an alternative texture for the weapon, but this was not used in the final version.
  • Due to this weapon's strong resemblance to the ADAM Harvester from the BioShock series (seen to the right), Valve requested and subsequently received permission from 2K Games to include it in Team Fortress 2.
    • The connection to BioShock is further reinforced in the name, which is a reference to the Vita-Chambers from Bioshock. The Vita-Saw and Vita-Chambers even share similar functions. In BioShock, the Vita-Chambers respawn the player with a portion of their health and EVE, the energy used to perform abilities. Similarly, the Vita-Saw will respawn the player with a portion of their ÜberCharge after death.
    • Due to copyright reasons, this item is not sold in the Mann Co. Store.
  • The original name of the weapon model was the Gentzücken Battle Needle before being officially added to the game.

Notes

  • The Vita-Saw was announced to have Allows you to see enemy health attribute in the April 14, 2011 Patch (Hatless Update). This did not happen, and the incorrect information was removed from the official release note.
