Meet the Pyro | |
“ | I fear no man. But that thing... it scares me.
— The Heavy on the Pyro
|
” |
The Pyro is a mumbling pyromaniac of indeterminate origin who has a fervent fondness for all things fire related. As shown in Meet The Pyro, the Pyro appears to be insane and delusional, living in a utopian fantasy world known as Pyroland.
The Pyro specializes in fighting enemies at close range using a homemade Flame Thrower. Enemies set on fire suffer from afterburn and take additional damage over time, allowing the Pyro to excel at hit-and-run tactics. Due to the Flamethrower’s short range, the Pyro is weaker at longer ranges and relies heavily on ambushing and taking alternate routes to catch opponents off-guard.
Although categorized as an offensive class, the Pyro brings a few sources of utility to the battlefield. The Pyro’s compression blast, for example, can deflect enemy projectiles, extinguish burning teammates, and forcibly reposition any enemy, even one under the effects of an ÜberCharge.
Because enemies hit by fire are visibly ignited, the Pyro is the best class for Spy-checking, as even a small puff of flame can nullify the Spy’s Cloak and disguise. Additionally, the Pyro can use the Homewrecker, Maul, or Neon Annihilator to protect an Engineer’s buildings from an enemy Spy's Sapper or use the Scorch Shot or Detonator to jump to normally unreachable places.
The Pyro wears an asbestos-lined suit that provides protection from the afterburn of other Pyros, though it does not add any resistance to the direct damage taken from the flamethrower. The three incendiary grenades on the Pyro's character model are purely cosmetic and cannot be used.
The Pyro is voiced by Dennis Bateman.

Basic strategy
- Ambush enemies to catch them in the short range of your Flamethrower. Use corners to your advantage; however, be sure that the nozzle of the Flamethrower isn't visible from around the corner.
- Don't approach enemies head-on; they will notice you and use your short range to their advantage.
- Approaching enemies from the back is usually a much safer and stronger route to attack. This is an especially effective method when employed with the Backburner.
- Your Flamethrower chews up a lot of ammo. Pick up fallen weapons to refill your supply.
- You can often set enemies on fire and retreat, leaving them to die from the afterburn.
Weapons
Note: Weapon damage is approximate and listed at base value. See individual weapon pages for additional figures.
The Flamethrower, Backburner, Degreaser, Phlogistinator, Rainblower, Flare Gun, Detonator, and Scorch Shot deal no damage when fired underwater, instead producing harmless bubbles. The aforementioned weapons will deal damage if fired from above water at an enemy that is only partially immersed in water; however, the water will immediately extinguish the ensuing afterburn.
Primary
Fire damage is determined by particle range from Flamethrower.

Bugs
- When a player is selecting a class in-game while on BLU team, the Pyro is holding a RED team Flamethrower instead of the BLU team Flamethrower.
- If a burning player enters a spawn area and changes to Pyro, they will change classes but still be ignited for the remainder of the original duration. The Pyro will not take damage from the afterburn but will still shout, "Fire!". During this time, fire-based critical hits such those from the Axtinguisher will affect the Pyro.
Trivia
- The Pyro's voice actor, Dennis Bateman, also voices the Spy class.
- The Pyro has the same voice for the English, German, Spanish, French, and Russian versions of Team Fortress 2.
- Three Napalm Grenades, weapons from Team Fortress Classic, appear strapped to the front of the Pyro's suit and were originally intended to be usable weapons in Team Fortress 2. However, all thrown grenades were eventually scrapped for balancing purposes.
- The first BLU team Pyro resembled Template:W.
- The Pyro is the mascot of "Pyro's Hamburgers", a brand of food sold in Left 4 Dead 2.
- The Pyro is playable in Killing Floor as a promotional bonus character for those who have purchased both Killing Floor and Team Fortress 2.
- The Pyro appears in Worms: Reloaded as part of a playable stage. Additionally, the Pyro's gas mask is a selectable hat for the player's worms.
- The Pyro's gas mask is wearable by the Tank class of Monday Night Combat under the name "Jet Guns Are Better".
- The Pyro, along with the Heavy and the Spy, is a playable character as one character called "Team Fortress" in the PC version of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Pyro drives the standard car whilst Heavy and Spy drive the boat and the plane respectively.
- The Pyro has a mask that is in Super Monday Night Combat as a skin that can be bought from the shop available in the game. The Pyro also got a hat called Triclops. This was available during May 10, 2012 Patch. The items can still be purchased today by getting Super Monday Night Combat from Steam and/or purchasing items from the store within the Super Monday Night Combat game.
