“ | This Spy has already breached our defenses...
You've seen what he's done to our colleagues! And worst of all: He could be any one of us. — The BLU Spy on the RED Spy
|
” |
Hailing from an indeterminate region of Switzerland, the Spy is an aficionado of sharp suits and even sharper knives, relying on stealth and trickery to aid the team. Using his unique array of cloaking watches, he can render himself invisible and even fake his own death, leaving unaware opponents off-guard. His Disguise Kit lets him take on the form of any class, allowing him to blend in while behind enemy lines before stabbing his unsuspecting 'teammates' in the back, quite literally. In fact, a swift backstab from behind with the Spy's trusty Knife will take out any foe in a single hit.
In addition to being able to assassinate key enemies quickly and efficiently, the Spy is great against the Engineer. Using his Sappers, he can disable the Engineer's buildings, slowly draining their health until they are destroyed, unless fixed by an Engineer. The Spy is voiced by Dennis Bateman.

Basic Strategy
- Use your Knife to backstab enemies from behind, killing them instantly.
- Disguise yourself as an enemy with your Disguise Kit. Beware, attacking will remove your disguise.
- Hit MOUSE2 to Cloak and become fully invisible for a short period of time.
- Use your Cloak to get behind enemy lines, and your disguise to move around amongst them.
- Try to act like an enemy while disguised. Observe where enemy team members are, and disguise as one of them.
- Place your Electro Sappers on enemy Sentry Guns to destroy them. Disguises aren't lost when placing Sappers.
- Your Electro Sappers disable Sentry Guns before destroying them. Sap a Sentry Gun before attacking the Engineer. When sapping, wait for the Engineer to start taking off the Electro Sapper, then attack.
- Call for enemy Medics by hitting E while disguised.

Trivia
- The beta version of Team Fortress 2 had a fire-proof suit for the Spy. It took damage but could not be ignited. It replaced the Spy's primary weapon: the Revolver.
- The Spy's old bio appears on his trading card, reading: "A master of disguise, misdirection, and the byzantine details of who really runs things, the Spy is a double reverse quadruple agent whose reflexive suspicion is entirely justified."
- The BLU Scout's Mother is in a relationship with the RED Spy. A file in the BLU base contains photos documenting their activities. The Spy refers to her as "Ma Petite Chou-fleur" ("My Little Cauliflower").
- The Spy is known to speak phrases in Italian, French and Spanish.
- A BLU Spy periodically appeared behind the RED Sniper in the Day 3 post of the Sniper Update, before the joint Spy Update was ultimately revealed.
- In the Beta version, the Spy's suit was gray for both teams, and he wore a team colored arm band. This version can still be seen in the Spy's HUD.
- While the Sniper, Soldier and Demoman are also known smokers, the Spy is the only class to actually hold a cigarette in his mouth during gameplay.
- Before the Spy update, he had a calmer personality for domination or revenge. After the Sniper vs. Spy Update, his Domination lines now insult his opponents. As his voice lines are said in a calm collected manner, this gives him a split personality.
- There are Revenge voice clips that are unused in the game at present.
- The Spy is the class that most medics least tend to ÜberCharge due to the fact that they are secretive and are not very good for directly attacking opponents.
