Meet the Spy | |
“ | This Spy has already breached our defenses...
You've seen what he's done to our colleagues! And worst of all: He could be any one of us. — The BLU Spy on the RED Spy.
|
” |
The Spy, hailing from an indeterminate region of France, is a fan of sharp suits and even sharper knives who relies on stealth and trickery to aid the team. Using his unique array of cloaking watches, he can render himself invisible or even fake his own death, leaving unaware opponents off-guard. His Disguise Kit lets him take on the form of any class on either side, allowing him to blend in while behind enemy lines before literally stabbing his unsuspecting 'teammates' in the back. In fact, a swift backstab with the Spy's trusty Knife will take out any foe in a single hit.
In addition to being able to assassinate key enemies quickly and efficiently, the Spy has an advantage over the Engineer. Using his Sappers, he can disable the Engineer's buildings — slowly draining their health until they are destroyed unless removed by an Engineer or a Pyro wielding the Homewrecker.
Two other common Spy targets are the Heavy and the Medic. While a Heavy has one of his Miniguns spun up, he moves at a far slower speed than normal — this slower move speed along with the distraction of combat makes for an easy opportunity for a backstab. Medics usually stay very close to their healing targets and do not watch their backs, which renders them as prime backstab targets. Snipers are also obvious Spy targets due to their slower movement speed and lack of nearby awareness when scoped into their Sniper Rifles. Snipers can use a Razorback to defend themselves from a single backstab, which also stuns the offending Spy.
The Spy is voiced by Dennis Bateman.

Basic strategy
- Use your Knife to backstab enemies from behind, killing them instantly.
- Disguise yourself as an enemy with your Disguise Kit. Beware, attacking will remove your disguise.
- Hit MOUSE2 to Cloak and become fully invisible for a short period of time.
- Use your Cloak to get behind enemy lines, and your disguise to move around amongst them.
- Try to act like an enemy while disguised. Observe where enemy team members are, and disguise as one of them.
- Place your Electro Sappers on enemy Sentry Guns to destroy them. Disguises aren't lost when placing Sappers.
- Your Electro Sappers disable Sentry Guns before destroying them. Sap a Sentry Gun before attacking the Engineer.
- Call for enemy Medics by hitting E while disguised.
- While disguised, you can see the health of the enemy. Use your revolver to pick off weaker enemies.

Trivia
- The Spy's voice actor Dennis Bateman also voices the Pyro and the helicopter pilot in Left 4 Dead.
- The idea for the Spy came from a glitch in Quake where players would look like they're from the other team. [1]
- The BLU Scout's Mother is in a relationship with the RED Spy. A file in the BLU base contains photos documenting their activities. The Spy refers to her as "Ma Petite Chou-fleur" (Literally "My Little Cauliflower," which is the French equivalent of "My Sweetheart").
- The Spy is known to speak phrases in Italian, French, Spanish and Catalan.
- The Spy's suit colors changed prior to the game's release. The RED Spy originally wore a gray suit, while the BLU Spy's suit was a different shade of blue. Both had a striped tie and team-colored bands on their suits and arms, which made them resemble Team Fortress Classic's Civilian. These suits can still be seen in the Spy's HUD icon. The Spy's gibs still hold the colors of the old suit.
- The Spy's view model sleeves still has beta color schemes. In addition, the number of stripes on his sleeve do not match the world model.
- Template:W served as the first BLU team Spy.
- In Poker Night at the Inventory, an image of the RED Spy makes a cameo as the Jack of Diamonds in the "Poker Night" card deck. On the card, the RED Spy is shown on the top, and on the bottom there is a RED Spy disguised as a BLU Engineer.
- The Spy makes an appearance in Worms: Reloaded as one of the forts; the rest of the fort is composed of Gravel Pit. In addition, the Spy's red balaclava is a selectable hat for the player's worms.
- The Assassin class of Monday Night Combat has a promotional item with the Spy's disguise mask and the Scout's headset named "Bonk! Slash!". The disguise mask shows a Spy with a black balaclava, as opposed to the in-game team colored one.
