The Sniper on piercing rounds

The Machina (/ˈmɑːkiːnə/ or /ˈmækɨnə/ mah-kee-nə[1]) is a promotional primary weapon for the Sniper. It is a futuristic Sniper Rifle with a split at the end of its barrel and a soft grip. It is styled after the Longsword 202 ERASER from Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

While this weapon deals identical damage to the default Sniper Rifle, it cannot be fired unless the player is utilizing the scope. Attempting to fire the weapon unscoped will cause a "click" sound effect and emit sparks from the muzzle at no ammo cost. A fully charged shot fired by the Machina delivers an extra 15% damage and can pierce through multiple enemies. Buildings cannot be penetrated, though they can be damaged as usual by a penetration through a player. As a drawback, the weapon fires tracer rounds; each shot leaves a faint team-colored trail in the air for a few seconds, notifying enemies of the Sniper's position.

A successful penetration kill, where a fully charged shot penetrates an enemy to kill another enemy behind them, will trigger a unique fanfare sound effect audible to every player on the server, similar to the sound made by the Chargin' Targe.

This item was awarded in Genuine quality to players who pre-purchased Deus Ex: Human Revolution on Steam before August 26, 2011.

Bugs

  • If the player is backstabbed with Your Eternal Reward or Wanga Prick, the disguised Spy will appear to wield a normal Sniper Rifle.
  • Along with all other Sniper rifles, the Machina cannot detonate Pumpkin bombs.
  • The Machina is not specified in the Mann Co. Catalog.
  • Occasionally, the tracer round will stop around an enemy target despite the shot not registering as a hit.
  • When firing under the effects of damage recoil, the Machina may appear to fire two bullets: one bullet firing towards the intended target, and the other firing a few degrees higher at a diagonal angle out of the barrel. This may be caused by the Machina's particle effect. The second shot deals no damage and costs no ammo.
  • Destroying a building with a penetrating shot will show the kill icon for a penetrating bodyshot, but will not trigger the associated unique sound effect.
  • The tracer effect will stop at the first player it hits instead of penetrating through them with the bullet.
  • If the user is using left-handed viewmodels, the tracer will still fire out of the right side of the screen. This is due to the tracer effect following the world model's position, not the view model's.
  • The Sniper still pulls back the bolt after each shot, despite the fact that the Machina has no bolt to pull.
  • This weapon has been known to produce a large expanding sphere of red Xs around the player upon firing due to a particle error.
  • The unique sound effect for reloading the Machina currently does not work.
  • Attempting to scope while returning to the client view after taunting will cause the Sniper to scope, but there will appear to be no laser sight. Enemies will still be able to see the laser; this only affects the client. This refers to all Sniper Rifles.

Trivia

  • Much like the game from which it originates, the weapon is named after the phrase Template:W, Latin for "god out of the machine". It is a term used to describe a convenient plot device that appears out of nowhere to instantly solve a difficult problem.
