The Fan O'War is a melee weapon for the Scout. It appears as a large metal Template:W.
Hitting an opponent with the Fan O'War "marks them for death". This is denoted by several things: a skull and crossbones icon appearing over the target's head for all to see, the target hearing a distinctive sound upon being marked, and a skull and crossbones icon appearing in the target's HUD. Upon the marking, any subsequent damage dealt to the marked player will be mini-crits. The weapon itself deals only 10% of the Bat's base damage.
The Fan O'War, released with the Shogun Pack, was awarded in Genuine quality to players who pre-purchased Total War: SHOGUN 2 on Steam before March 15, 2011. It is also available through crafting, item drops, or purchase from the Mann Co. Store.
People who crafted this weapon before March 15, 2011 had their weapon upgraded to a Vintage variation.

Note: The second blueprint simply makes a Scout's melee weapon; there is still a chance of getting the Sandman, Holy Mackerel, Candy Cane, Boston Basher, or Sun-on-a-Stick instead. There will be approximately a 16.67% chance of crafting this item using the second blueprint.
Update history
- The item was added to the game.
- Crafting recipe added.
- All Fan O'Wars crafted before the patch have been changed to Vintage quality.
- The item was made tradeable.
Bugs
- Spies who have activated the Dead Ringer will have the skull above their head even after feigning death.
- The Fan O'War clips into the Scout's hand when drawn.
Trivia
- Template:W (軍配) were used by samurai officers in Japan for means of communication with their troops. They are also used by judges in sumo wrestling competitions.
- "Fan O'War" is a reference to Template:W, a powerful class of British naval ship from the 16th to 19th centuries.
- The hovering skull and crossbones is the same particle effect used by the self damage of the Gloves of Running Urgently, however its white coloring suggests closer similarity to the particle used by the Horseless Headless Horsemann.
- The Marked for Death icon that appears on the HUD is based upon the Heavy's skull shown on the "Anatomy of a Heavy Weapons Guy" poster, and the Rasputin Heavy achievement.
- Players who are marked for death that look up will be able to see the death icon above their head.
- Unlike the other Shogun Pack items, the Fan O'War is described with an inaccurate haiku verse. Instead of the traditional 5, 7, 5 syllables, it instead reads 5, 5, 5.
- During development, the Fan O'War was intended for the Soldier, but during play-testing, Valve decided that the attributes that they had coded worked best for the Scout. [1]
