Meet the Spy | |
“ | This Spy has already breached our defenses...
You've seen what he's done to our colleagues! And worst of all: He could be any one of us. — The BLU Spy on the RED Spy
|
” |
The Spy, hailing from an indeterminate region of France, is an enthusiast of sharp suits and even sharper knives. He relies on stealth and trickery to aid his team. Using a unique array of cloaking watches, he can render himself invisible or even fake his own death, leaving unaware opponents off-guard. His Disguise Kit lets him take on the form of any class on either team, allowing him to blend in while behind enemy lines before stabbing his unsuspecting "teammates" in the back. In fact, a swift backstab with any of the Spy's knives will kill any foe in a single hit - provided they aren't under the effects of any type of invulnerability or immense damage reduction.
In addition to being able to swiftly assassinate key enemies, the Spy possesses the ability to disable and destroy Engineer-constructed buildings with his Sapper. Once attached to an enemy building, the Sapper disables and slowly drains health from the building. However, a Sapper can be removed by an Engineer, or Pyro wielding the Homewrecker, Maul, or Neon Annihilator.
The Spy is able to enter an enemy teleporter and can use this to make his way to the enemy team, and blend in amongst them.
Whereas most players can only see the names and health of their teammates, the Spy can observe the names and health of the enemy team as well, allowing him to relay useful intelligence. This ability is unique to only the Spy and a Medic carrying the Solemn Vow.
The Spy is voiced by Dennis Bateman.

Basic strategy
- Use your knife to backstab enemies from behind, killing them instantly.
- Disguise yourself as an enemy with your Disguise Kit. Beware, attacking will remove your disguise.
- Hit MOUSE2 to cloak and become fully invisible for a short period of time.
- Use your Cloak to get behind enemy lines, and your disguise to move around amongst them.
- Try to act like an enemy while disguised. Observe where enemy team members are, and disguise as one of them.
- Place your Sappers on enemy Sentry Guns to destroy them. Disguises aren't lost when placing Sappers.
- Your Sappers disable Sentry Guns before destroying them. Sap a Sentry Gun before attacking the Engineer.
- However, if you are quick enough you could stab the Engineer and sap the Sentry Gun before it turns around.
- Call for enemy Medics by hitting E while disguised.
- Disguise yourself somewhere hidden. Try to disguise yourself in the enemy base.
- When disguised, avoid looking directly at or walking toward enemies.
- Try to not run into the same person you are disguised as.

- Sometimes but rarely, and even if the Spy is disguised as Engineer, the enemy will still see the disguised Spy holding a Spy weapon.
- Sometimes, when the Spy is disguised as a Scout holding the Scattergun, the handle of the Scattergun will be a revolver handle. A similar occurrence appears with the Shortstop
- When exiting out of the current disguise in third person, the hats and miscellaneous items of the player the Spy is disguised as will appear on the Spy for a split second.
- Rarely, disguised spies show up with a decapitated model. Also, sometimes players will show without their respective hats or styles.
- Sometimes, when disguised as Sniper, arrows from the Huntsman will show up on their back regardless if the target has it equipped or not.
