Not so tough now are ya? Are ya?!
The Scout marking an enemy for death

The Fan O'War is a community-created promotional melee weapon for the Scout. It is a large metal gunbai war fan.

Hitting an opponent with the Fan O'War "marks them for death", denoted by a white skull and crossbones icon appearing over the target's head. Upon being marked, the target hears a distinctive sound, and a skull icon appears on their HUD. During this period of 15 seconds, any subsequent hits taken by the target will be mini-crits. Only one player at a time may be marked by this weapon. If another player is hit with this weapon whilst another is marked, only the most recent one will be marked for death.

This weapon deals 95% less damage than the default Bat, and in a situation where it would normally deliver mini-crits, it will perform a critical hit. However, this deals less damage than a Bat as well, making it an inefficient means of killing enemies.

The Fan O'War was awarded in Genuine quality to players who pre-ordered Total War: SHOGUN 2 on Steam before March 15, 2011.

Trivia

  • Gunbai were used by samurai officers in Japan for means of communication with their troops. They are also used by judges in sumo wrestling competitions.
  • "Fan O'War" is a reference to the man o'war, a British Royal Naval expression for powerful warships used between the 16th and 19th centuries.
  • The Marked for Death icon that appears on the HUD is the Heavy's skull shown on the "Anatomy of a Heavy Weapons Guy" poster and the Rasputin achievement.
  • The Fan O'War was originally created for the Soldier.
  • The Fan O'War's description is written in Haiku format and is a parody of a haiku written by seventeenth century poet Matsuo Bashō. However, because this reference plays off of an English translation of his work, it does not follow the traditional 5-7-5 syllable pattern of haikus, instead following a 5-5-5 pattern.
