— The Pyro on just about anything
|
” |
The Pyro is a mumbling pyromaniac of indeterminate origin, and has a fervent fondness for fire and all things fire related. Wielding a homemade Flamethrower, the Pyro can ignite opponents, whittling their health away over time with the ensuing afterburn damage. The Pyro also wears an asbestos-lined suit that protects the wearer against any afterburn effect. Due to the short range of the Flamethrower, the Pyro relies heavily on ambush tactics to catch opponents off-guard. One of the primary, and vital roles of the Pyro is Spy-checking; a puff of flame will ignite (and therefore expose) both a Cloaked and a Disguised Spy.
Though categorized as an offensive class, the Pyro can also be a useful asset in defense, protecting friendly Sentry Guns from Spies and sending an entire attacking team retreating for health. In addition, the Pyro can use the compression blast ability to reflect enemy projectiles, extinguish burning teammates, separate a Medic from its target, disorient enemies by pushing them into the air, and even rocket jump by reflecting a rocket toward your feet. The Pyro can also ignite a friendly Sniper's Huntsman arrow, so it can ignite an enemy on a hit. The Pyro can remove Sappers from an Engineer's Buildings using the Homewrecker or the Maul.
The Pyro is voiced by Dennis Bateman.

Basic strategy
- Ambush enemies to catch them in the short range of your Flamethrower. Use corners to your advantage.
- Don't approach enemies head-on; they will notice you and use your short range to their advantage.
- Approaching enemies from the back is usually a much safer and stronger route to attack.
- Your Flamethrower chews up a lot of ammo. Pick up fallen weapons to refill your supply.
- You can often set enemies on fire and retreat, leaving them to die from the afterburn.
Weapons
Note: Weapon damage is approximate and listed at base value. See individual weapon pages for additional figures.
The Flamethrower, Backburner, Degreaser, Flare Gun, and Detonator deal no damage when fired underwater, instead they produce harmless bubbles. However, they will deal base damage if you are above the water and your enemy is also slightly above the water. There is no afterburn however, making these weapons less effective.

Bugs
- There is a small issue in the Pyro's BLU team icon, where the Pyro holds a RED Team Flamethrower instead of the BLU Team Flamethrower. This can be seen in the class menu in-game while on BLU team.
Trivia
- The Pyro is the mascot of "Pyro's Hamburgers", a brand of food sold in Left 4 Dead 2.
- Template:W was hired as the first BLU team Pyro.[2]
- The Pyro has the same voice for the English, German, Spanish, French and Russian versions of Team Fortress 2.
- The Pyro is playable in Killing Floor, as a promotional bonus character for those who have purchased both Killing Floor and Team Fortress 2. This makes the Pyro the only class to be playable in another game.
- The Pyro makes an appearance in Worms: Reloaded as part of one of the forts; the rest of the fort is composed of Hydro. In addition, the Pyro's gas mask is a selectable hat for the player's worms.
- A promotional item exists in Monday Night Combat of the Pyro's gas mask, wearable by the Tank class, with the name "Jet Guns Are Better".
- Three Napalm Grenades, a weapon from the original Team Fortress Classic, rest on the front of the Pyro's suit (unless the player has the Stockbroker's Scarf equipped). These were originally intended to be usable weapons in TF2, but they (along with all the other classes' grenades) were pulled from the game, and are now purely cosmetic.
- There is much debate about whether the Pyro is female or male, with evidence pointing both ways. Examples include:
- Other classes' domination lines include some which refer to Pyro as female, possibly just to insult the Pyro's fighting capability.
- A flowery purse is located on the locker in the spawn room on some maps near the Pyro's gasmask and suit.
- The Pyro's Madame Dixie hat and humiliation stance are both arguably feminine.
- The Pyro has been referred to as both "he" and "she" by Valve, including on the official blog, and in the UI, which referred to the Pyro as either 'him' or 'her' in the challenge dialogue box and alternated randomly between the two.
