Meet the Engineer | |
“ | Hey look buddy, I'm an engineer; that means I solve problems.
Not problems like 'What is beauty?', because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of philosophy. I solve practical problems. — The Engineer on his profession
|
” |
A soft-spoken, amiable Texan with a knack for all things mechanical, the Engineer (real name Dell Conagher) chooses to build and maintain buildings that benefit the team rather than engage in much direct combat. The Engineer's various gadgets include the Sentry Gun, an automated turret that fires at any enemy in range, the Dispenser, a device that replenishes the health and ammo of nearby teammates and Teleporters that quickly transport his teammates to the fray.
However, the Engineer's ingenious devices are under constant threat from explosives and devious enemy Spies; a good Engineer must keep his gear under a watchful eye and in good repair at all times. When the Engineer needs to get his hands dirty, his trio of generic, yet capable weapons combined with the assistance of his helpful hardware make him more than capable of holding his own in a fight.
Strategically, the Engineer can transport buildings he has already built and deploy them elsewhere, at the cost of slower running speed while carrying them. Buildings also need a few seconds to re-deploy, and are vulnerable while deploying.

Basic Strategy
- Use the build tool to place sentry guns, dispensers, and teleporters.
- You need metal to build, repair, and upgrade your buildings. Collect fallen weapons, ammo boxes or use health cabinets to get more metal.
- Hit your buildings while they build to double their build speed.
- Hit your buildings with your Wrench to upgrade it with metal. Each level adds more structure health and feature bonuses.
- Build sentries to hold the line for your team. Good spots are usually just behind choke points on the map.
- Build dispensers to provide your teammates with health and ammo. They also generate metal for you to use.
- Build teleporters to help your team reach the front line faster. Build an entrance as you leave spawn for the first time...your teammates will thank you.
- Keep an eye out for enemy spies attaching sappers to your buildings. Use your Wrench to remove sappers.
- When placing buildings, use the secondary-fire button to rotate the blueprint clockwise.
- Move your buildings around on the map after they've been built. Build and upgrade your structures in a safe spot before bringing them to the front lines, and take them away to prevent their destruction.
- If you're in an open place, look around after selecting the Sentry and you will see a grid appear which indicates the line where enemies cross to trigger the auto-aim feature of the Sentry. Use it to decide the best Sentry position.
- If you're in an open place, and your stuff is sapped, kill the Spy first, otherwise he may backstab you while you're trying to remove the sappers.
- If you are already at your stuff then hit the Sentry Sapper once while on the way to the spy...that way it will only take one whack to destroy it after you take care of the Spy.
- Build Dispensers first if there is no ammo boxes near your nest, if not, build a Sentry Gun, dispensers can always wait if there is ammo boxes near. (ammo is near Medic kits most of the cases too)
- During Sudden Death the Resupply Locker is locked and no Health Pickups are available (but the ammo boxes are), so the dispenser should always be built first.
- By mastering the use of the Wrangler it is now easier for the Engineer to Sentry rocket jump by using the rockets of his own level 3 sentry.

Trivia
- The Engineer is the only class whose default primary weapon is not unique to the class.
- The Engineer is voiced by Grant Goodeve.
- The Engineer's voice actor and the Soldier's voice actor have both voiced the character Wolf O'Donnell from Nintendo's Star Fox series: Grant Goodeve (the Engineer) in Star Fox: Assault, and Rick May (the Soldier) in Star Fox 64.
- The Engineer's favorite equation is in fact part of the equation that governs character lighting in-game.
- The Engineer is the shortest class in the game.
- The song the Engineer plays during Meet the Engineer is called 'More Gun', which is based on 'Someone Else's Song' and was originally written by Jeff Tweedy of the American Country band Wilco for their album 'Being There' in 1996.
- The Engineer is the only class thus far to have displayed any real musical talent (if the Soldier's bugle, the Heavy's singing, the Medic's air-violin, and the Pyro's air-guitar skills are ignored).
- The Engineer designed and built the Sentry Gun under contract from 'TF Industries' in 1965. The PDF manual for the game that is listed in Steam is a blueprint and promotional guide to using the Sentry Gun.
- The Engineer drinks 'Blu Streak' brand beer, as seen in Meet the Engineer.
- One of the Pyro's hats, the Respectless Rubber Glove, appears to be the Engineer's missing left glove.
- The Engineer appeared on the cover of The Teufort Times[1] for his part in the creation of crafting.
- The Soldier calls the Engineer a "cowardin' Canadian" in his domination lines, which may add suspicion towards the Engineer's Texan heritage.
- The Soldier may also be accusing the Engineer of being a 'Draft-dodger': Americans who did not want to enlist moved to Canada to avoid being drafted.
- In addition, the Engineer may in turn call a dominated Soldier a "damn Yankee". This may either add further suspicion to his true American roots, or instead may simply be animosity of a resident of a former Confederate state towards one of a Union state. If this is the case, we may have a clue as to where the Soldier precisely comes from.
- In the trailer for the Mac update, the Engineer is seen holding the Frontier Justice. It is also notable that this glimpse of the primary weapon unlockable came long before the release of it.
- The Engineer and Spy are the only 2 classes to use the PDA slots.
- The Engineer was previously the only class besides the Medic without some form of physical or mental liability. The Heavy is morbidly obese, the Scout has radiation poisoning from Bonk! Atomic Punch, the Soldier possesses extremely poor mental health and exhibits suicidal tendencies, the Pyro uses an asbestos-lined suit (and displays similarly poor mental health), the Demoman is an alcoholic, a smoker, and lacks depth perception, the Sniper's organs have shut down as a result of mastering Jarate, the Spy is a casual smoker, and now the Engineer is apparently an amputee by choice.
- The Engineer can reload his Shotgun faster than the Pyro and the Soldier, at the same rate as the Heavy.
- A new comic featuring the Engineer was released on July 2nd, 2010 with the new blog post.[2]
- The BLU Engineer's name, Dell Conagher, was revealed in the "Loose Canon" comic, along with his grandfather's name, Radigan Conagher.
- Radigan Conagher's uniform bears a striking resemblance to the Engineer's, complete with goggles, hardhat and dungarees suitably styled to fit in with the time of his appearance (1890).
- The Engineer's equivalent in the original team of mercenaries BLU hired was supposedly Nikola Tesla, armed with a bag of blueprints instead of a PDA.
- The Engineer rarely removes his goggles. The first time his naked eyes were seen was in the comic "Loose Canon".
- The Engineer's grandfather built three life-extending machines: one for Blutarch Mann (CEO of BLU), one for Redmond Mann (CEO of RED), and one for a currently unidentified person (their name on the list of patrons is obscured). [3]
- The Scout often advises the Engineer to build a "Not-Dyin' Machine", much like the ones his grandfather built.
- The Engineer, Demoman, and Pyro are the only classes with animated or jiggleboned headgear.
- A photograph on the Engineer update page displays a young boy (presumably the Engineer) trying on his first pair of goggles, as the Engineer from Team Fortress Classic looks on proudly and pats him on the shoulder. If the child is indeed the Engineer, it can be implied that the Engineer from Team Fortress Classic is in fact his father.
- If the photo is confirmed as canon, this would mean that the events of Team Fortress Classic might be set between the beginning of the century and the World Wars. This is unlikely however, as most of TFC's design is much more futuristic than TF2's.
- The Engineer is the only class to ever get weapon unlocks before his initial update. The weapons were the Lugermorph and the Golden Wrench.
- The Engineer is the only class to possess two fatal taunts: his guitar, and the Organ Grinder setting on his Gunslinger mechanical fist.
- As of after his update, the Engineer can transport buildings he has already built and deploy them elsewhere, at the cost of slower running speed while deploying them. Buildings also need a few seconds to re-deploy, and are extremely vulnerable when they are.
- The Engineer is now the class with most unlockable items, leading with 25 unlockable items. He is preceded by the Soldier and Scout, who both have 24.
