The Half-Zatoichi is a melee weapon for the Soldier and Demoman. It appears as a samurai's katana, carrying a circular guard with rounded notches, adorned with brown hilt wrapping. Upon killing an enemy, the blade becomes decorated with the victim's blood.
Whenever the Half-Zatoichi becomes the active weapon, it cannot be switched with another until a kill is made. To counter this limitation, the blade restores the user's health to 100% upon a successful kill. Wielding this weapon allows the player to instantly slay any enemy actively brandishing a Half-Zatoichi of their own. A few seconds after a kill, the blood on the blade will disappear, leaving the player to be limited to the Half-Zatoichi once more. Returning to a resupply cabinet gives the player a one-second chance to switch to another equipped weapon. Despite being a sword, this weapon utilizes standard melee range.
Taunting as a Demoman with this weapon equipped will perform the Decapitation kill taunt.
Players who pre-purchased Total War: SHOGUN 2 on Steam before March 15, 2011 were awarded with a Genuine quality version of this item.

Bugs
- The Soldier's thumb clips through the guard in third person view.
- Both the Soldier and Demoman do not fully grip the sword in first person view. This is due to reusing the hand position of the Shovel and Eyelander respectively.
- The weapon uses the Demoman and Soldier's RED sleeves in first person view, regardless of their team.
- Upon death, the dropped Half-Zatoichi will appear bloody even if the player had not acquired a kill.
- The swinging animation may not play in some cases.
- If the Demoman/Soldier kills a Spy who has a Dead Ringer out, the blade will become bloody, but he will still be unable to switch weapons.
- If a Demoman kills another player with the kill taunt, the blade will become bloody, but confer neither the health boost nor ability to switch weapons.
- Players are able to switch between the Half-Zatoichi and other weapons if done so before the draw animation ends and the idle animation begins. It is unknown if this is a bug or intended.
- The loadout screen shows the Demoman holding the Half-Zatoichi in the same one-handed manner as the Bottle, Frying Pan and Ullapool Caber. In-game, he holds it in the same two-handed manner as he does the Eyelander, Scotsman's Skullcutter and Claidheamh Mòr which all appear correctly in the loadout screen.
Trivia
- Template:W is a fictional character who appears in many Japanese films. He is a very able swordsman, even though he is blind. The "half" part of the name comes from the fact that the Soldier and Demoman are visually impaired but not fully blind, due to an ill-fitting hat and a missing eye, respectively.
- The weapon attribute is a reference to the legend of Template:W, a famous Japanese swordsmith, who is said to have forged swords that, once drawn, could not be sheathed again until the blade had drawn blood.
- The weapon's description is written in Template:W, a form of Japanese poetry. In the second line "duel" is pronounced as a two-syllable Template:W in order to fit the haiku's Template:W.
