You have dishonored this entire unit!
The Soldier

The Half-Zatoichi is a promotional melee weapon for the Soldier and Demoman. It is a samurai's katana with a circular guard with rounded notches, adorned with brown hilt wrapping.

Anytime the Half-Zatoichi is chosen as the active weapon, the wielder is Honorbound and cannot switch it for another until obtaining a kill or touching a Resupply locker. Honorbound only takes effect after the draw animation is complete however, so there is a small grace period during which the player can freely switch away from the weapon. Upon slaying an enemy with the Half-Zatoichi, the blade becomes decorated in blood, the wielder's health is instantly restored to its maximum limit, and the weapon can once again be switched. Additionally, any player wielding a Half-Zatoichi is capable of instantly killing any enemy brandishing a Half-Zatoichi of their own. Unlike the Demoman's other swords, this weapon utilizes the standard melee range.

Taunting as a Demoman with the Half-Zatoichi equipped will perform the Decapitation kill taunt. Successfully killing someone with the taunt will allow the Demoman to sheath the weapon.

This item was awarded in Genuine quality to players who pre-purchased Total War: Shogun 2 on Steam before March 15, 2011.

Bugs

  • The loadout screen shows the Demoman wielding the Half-Zatoichi one-handed. In-game, he wields it with two hands. A Spy disguised as a Demoman wields the Half-Zatoichi one-handed as well.
  • It is possible to get the Demoman achievement Scotch Tap twice with this weapon.
  • In Pyrovision, blood will not appear on the weapon after killing an enemy.

Trivia

  • Zatoichi is a fictional blind swordsman who appears in many Japanese films. The term "Half-Zatoichi" is a reference to the Demoman having only one eye, and the Soldier having his helmet over his eyes as opposed to being completely blind.
  • The weapon attribute is a reference to the legend of Muramasa, a famous Japanese swordsmith, who is said to have forged swords that, once drawn, could not be sheathed again until the blade had drawn blood.
  • In the censored version of Team Fortress 2, the weapon is not bloodied after a kill.
  • Even though a katana is a double-handed sword only the Demoman uses it double-handed in first person mode.
