The Soldier

The Half-Zatoichi is a melee weapon for the Soldier and Demoman. It appears as a samurai's katana with a circular guard with rounded notches and brown hilt wrapping.

Once active, the Half-Zatoichi cannot be switched to another weapon until a kill is made. Upon killing, the player's health is restored in full and the Half-Zatoichi will become decorated with the blood of one's now fallen target. Anyone wielding a Half-Zatoichi can instantly slay any enemy actively brandishing a Half-Zatoichi of their own.

The Half-Zatoichi, released with the Shogun Pack, was awarded in Genuine quality to players who pre-purchased Total War: SHOGUN 2 on Steam before March 15, 2011. It is also available through crafting, item drops, or purchase from the Mann Co. Store.

  • The first blueprint simply makes a Soldier's melee weapon; there is still a chance of getting the Equalizer or Pain Train instead. There will be approximately a 33.33% chance of crafting this item using the first blueprint.
  • The second blueprint simply makes a Demoman's melee weapon; there is still a chance of getting the Eyelander, Scotsman's Skullcutter, Pain Train, Ullapool Caber, or Claidheamh Mòr instead. There will be approximately a 16.67% chance of crafting this item using the second blueprint.

Update history

March 10, 2011 Patch

  • The item was added to the game.

March 11, 2011 Patch

  • Fixed players getting a health bonus based on the weapon they're currently holding instead of the weapon that dealt the killing blow.

Bugs

  • The Soldier's thumb clips through the crossguard in third person view.
  • Both the Soldier and Demoman do not fully grip the sword in first person view. This is due to reusing the hand position of the Shovel and Eyelander respectively.
  • The weapon uses the Demoman and Soldier's RED sleeves in first person view, regardless of their team.
  • If the user has the "Remember last weapon between lives" option enabled, they will spawn with the weapon out and cannot put it away. The only options are to change loadout, disable that setting, or repeatedly press a different weapon key upon spawning.
  • According to the game files, the Zatoichi is intended to use the Direct Hit's taunt when wielded by the Soldier and the Eyelander's taunt when wielded by the Demoman. These taunts have been implemented incorrectly and thus do not play.
  • If the user attacks a Civilian with the Zatoichi, it will crash the server that the user is currently on.
  • Players are able to switch between the Half-Zatoichi and other weapons if done so before the draw animation ends or the idle animation begins. (It is unknown if this is a bug or intended).
  • Upon death, the bloodied Half-Zatoichi will drop even if the player had not acquired a kill.
  • The swinging animation may not play in some cases.

Trivia

  • Template:W is a fictional character who appears in many Japanese films. He is a very able swordsman, even though he is blind. The "half" part of the name comes from the fact that the Soldier and Demoman are visually impaired but not fully blind, through ill-fitting hats and a missing eye, respectively.
  • The weapon attribute is a reference to the legend of Template:W, a famous Japanese swordsmith, who is said to have forged swords that, once drawn, could not be sheathed again until the sword had drawn blood.
  • The weapon's description is written in Template:W, a form of Japanese poetry. However, the second line requires a flourished pronunciation of the word duel (doo-ell) to fit its required seven syllables.
