The Half-Zatoichi is a melee weapon for the Soldier and Demoman. It appears as a samurai's katana with a circular guard with rounded notches and brown hilt wrapping. The Half-Zatoichi was released with the Shogun Pack.
Players, who pre-purchased Total War: SHOGUN 2 on Steam before March 15, 2011, were awarded with a Genuine quality version of the Half-Zatoichi. People who crafted this weapon before March 15, 2011 had their weapon upgraded to a Vintage variation.
Once active, the Half-Zatoichi cannot be switched to another weapon until a kill is made. Upon killing, the player's health is restored in full and the Half-Zatoichi will become decorated with the blood of one's now fallen target. Anyone wielding a Half-Zatoichi can instantly slay any enemy actively brandishing a Half-Zatoichi of their own. Should the player then change to a different active weapon, the Half-Zatoichi will require another kill to be made upon reselection.
Taunting with the Half-Zatoichi will perform the Demoman's Decapitation kill taunt. Performing the taunt, as the Soldier, will play the same taunt as the Direct Hit.

Notes:
- The second blueprint simply makes a Soldier's melee weapon; there is still a chance of getting the Equalizer or Pain Train instead. There will be approximately a 33.33% chance of crafting this item using the second blueprint.
- The third blueprint simply makes a Demoman's melee weapon; there is still a chance of getting the Eyelander, Scotsman's Skullcutter, Pain Train, Ullapool Caber, or Claidheamh Mòr instead. There will be approximately a 16.67% chance of crafting this item using the third blueprint.

Bugs
- The Soldier's thumb clips through the crossguard in third person view.
- Both the Soldier and Demoman do not fully grip the sword in first person view. This is due to reusing the hand position of the Shovel and Eyelander respectively.
- The weapon uses the Demoman and Soldier's RED sleeves in first person view, regardless of their team.
- If the user has the "Remember last weapon between lives" option enabled, they can spawn with the weapon out and be unable to put it away. The only recourse is to change loadout, disable that setting, or switch weapons before the draw animation ends.
- Upon death, the dropped Half-Zatoichi will appear bloody even if the player had not acquired a kill.
- The swinging animation may not play in some cases.
- If a Demoman kills another player with the kill taunt, the blade will become bloody, but he will still be unable to switch weapons.
- Players are able to switch between the Half-Zatoichi and other weapons if done so before the draw animation ends and the idle animation begins. It is unknown if this is a bug or intended.
- The Demoman version of the Half-Zatoichi does not possess the longer attack range attribute, as experienced on the Eyelander, the Scotsman's Skullcutter, the Horseless Headless Horseman's Headtaker and the Claidheamh Mor. However, its killing taunt retains the same range as that of its counterparts.
Trivia
- Template:W is a fictional character who appears in many Japanese films. He is a very able swordsman, even though he is blind. The "half" part of the name comes from the fact that the Soldier and Demoman are visually impaired but not fully blind, due to an ill-fitting hat and a missing eye, respectively.
- The weapon attribute is a reference to the legend of Template:W, a famous Japanese swordsmith, who is said to have forged swords that, once drawn, could not be sheathed again until the blade had drawn blood.
- The weapon's description is written in Template:W, a form of Japanese poetry. However, the second line requires a flourished pronunciation of the word duel (doo-ell) to fit its characteristic seven syllables.
