I am having a heart attack!
The Soldier taking the weapon's name too literally

The Panic Attack is a community-created primary weapon for the Engineer, and a secondary weapon for the Soldier, Pyro, and Heavy. It is a pump-action shotgun with a drum magazine attached to the front and an external firing hammer.

Compared to the default Shotgun, the Panic Attack deploys 50% faster, fires 50% more pellets per shot, and deals 30% less damage. If all pellets hit at point blank, this translates to marginally more damage compared to the default Shotgun (94 instead of 90). The weapon also fires wide, fixed shots in a 5 x 3 grid pattern, whether or not bullet spread is enabled.

The weapon's main downside lies in its gradually widening shot pattern: as the user fires successive shots (such as by holding down primary fire or firing before the class cocks the weapon), the shot pattern spreads and only resets when the player stops firing or reloads. This makes confrontations past close range difficult, and makes successive shots a less viable strategy.

The Panic Attack was contributed to the Steam Workshop under the name "War Drum".

Bugs

  • Due to this weapon being a primary weapon for the Engineer, it can be crafted using a Soldier, Pyro or Heavy class token and a Primary slot token in place of Secondary slot.
  • The quality of the backpack icon is affected depending on the Texture Quality of the game, which isn't a normal behavior, as other backpack icons for other items aren't affected depending on the Texture Quality that the player set.
  • A bullet casing is visible while holding the Panic Attack, presumably for its reload animation. This gives it several visual bugs:
    • If the weapon is viewed from the Pyro's loadout, it shows the casing hovering underneath the gun.
    • If playing with high latency, while inspecting the Panic Attack as a Soldier or Engineer, the bullet casing will brush past the screen when the user turns the gun over.

Trivia

  • This weapon gets its name from a panic attack, which is a sudden feeling of intense fear and anxiety.
  • The style of the Panic Attack is reminiscent of a standard 12 gauge pump Shotgun with a drum magazine in front of the pump, instead of behind it.
  • The Panic Attack is based heavily upon the Winchester Model 1897, as the heat shield and bayonet mount is very similar to the M97's.
  • The original kill icon was actually a different weapon. This was changed in a later update to the current icon.
