The Panic Attack is a community-created primary weapon for the Engineer, and a secondary weapon for the Soldier, Pyro, and Heavy. It is a pump-action shotgun with a heat shield barrel shroud, a drum magazine attached to the front and an external firing hammer.

Compared to the default Shotgun, the Panic Attack deploys 50% faster, fires 50% more pellets per shot, and deals 20% less damage. If all pellets hit at point blank, this translates to slightly more damage compared to the default Shotgun (108 instead of 90). The weapon also fires wide, fixed shots in a 5 x 3 grid pattern, whether or not bullet spread is enabled.

  • The Panic Attack was added to the game. The attributes were:
    • 34% faster reload time.
    • Fire rate increases as health decreases.
    • Hold fire to load up to 4 shells.
    • Weapon spread increases as health decreases.

January 7, 2015 Patch

  • Fixed the Crit Boost material effect for the Panic Attack.
  • Updated the kill icon for the Panic Attack.

January 15, 2015 Patch #1

  • Fixed being able to pick-up buildings while reloading the Panic Attack.

February 11, 2015 Patch #1

  • Fixed the Panic Attack not using the correct sound for Crits.

July 2, 2015 Patch #1 (Gun Mettle Update)

  • Changed attributes:
    • Base Fire rate increased. (from 15% to 30%)
    • Base reload speed increased. (from 33% to 50%)
    • Added increased switch to speed by +50%.

December 17, 2015 Patch (Tough Break Update)

  • Changed attribute:
    • No longer auto-fires when fully loaded. Shots can be held and released at will.

  • Updated the materials for the Panic Attack to support mat_picmip

October 20, 2017 Patch #1 (Jungle Inferno Update)

  • Changed attributes:
    • Increased switch speed by 50%.
    • Increased number of pellets by 50%.
    • Decreased damage by 30%.
    • Fires a wide, fixed shot pattern.
    • Shot pattern grows with successive shots but resets after the player stops firing or reloads.

March 28, 2018 Patch #1

  • Changed attributes:
    • Reduced worst-case shot pattern spread by 40%.
    • Reduced damage penalty to -20% (from -30%).
  • Fixed a visual artifact when inspecting the Panic Attack.

January 9, 2024 Patch

  • Fixed overlapping texture for the Panic Attack's kill icon

Trivia

  • This weapon gets its name from a panic attack, which is a sudden feeling of intense fear and anxiety.
  • As with most shotguns in the game, the Panic Attack is a left-handed shotgun (as shown by the ejection port being visible on the left-hand side of the gun). A right-handed shotgun has the ejection port on its right side to prevent ejected shells from striking the user.
