Battery Canteens Battery Canteens

I want to do this, but I think I'll screw up. Should I download the split-screen version of the recorder? Edit: Okay, I've watched the normal Power Canteen video, and I have a few questions. 1. On the Engineer critical canteen part, how would I be able to spawn a robot that doesn't shoot instantly? 2. On the Engineer über canteen part, how would I be able to place a robot that I can control with shooting? 3. On the Engineer Buildings Upgrade canteen part, how would I be able to start the wave and not have any robots come out? 4. On the Engineer Refill Ammo canteen part, on the level 3 Sentry, would I be able to use a Wrangler, shoot all its ammo, then return with a default loadout and show it? 5. On the Medic canteen part, how do I spawn a bot that I can control and name Friendly Scout? 6. On the Medic Refill Ammo part, how would I be able to get the first person view of the bot? 7. In the video, how would I be able to take away the chat box so it doesn't say "[player] used [canteen]!"? Thanks ahead of time. Punishment Fatal (talk) 20:29, 13 June 2013 (PDT)

For the bot stuff, you should look at this. For the chat stuff, you should use the setting hud_saytext_time 0. Darkid (talk|contribs) 20:36, 13 June 2013 (PDT)
Thanks for that. I have another question though. When I try to download WeGame, it comes up with an error saying that my browser (Google Chrome) can't find that page. What should I do? Edit: Okay, I found out that WeGame was sold to Tagged and is no longer working. Is there any other sources besides Fraps that could work? I don't want to pay for it, and also I don't think Source Recorder can record me actually showing off the item in the loadout screen. Punishment Fatal (talk) 23:04, 13 June 2013 (PDT)
Yes source recorder only record in-game [...]. But i'll recommended you to use "Mirillis Action!" [...] it's a recorder which is similar as fraps but trust me Mirillis Action is better. User Karmacharger Charger 2.png Karmacharger 4:01 , 6/14/2013 (PDT)
Sweet, thanks for helping! (P.S. In future reference, thanks for giving me a little layout for the Battery Canteens). Punishment Fatal (talk) 02:32, 14 June 2013 (PDT)
Edit: I don't think I can take this recording job anymore. When I try to upload a video, it says that it's in the wrong format so I can't do so. Also, whenever I record, I have a terrible framerate (around 15-20ish), and my HUD's messed up since I had a custom one before I reset it, and deleting most of the files did nothing. Punishment Fatal (talk) 11:37, 14 June 2013 (PDT)
Youtube only support (.MOV .MPEG4 .AVI .WMV .MPEGPS .FLV .3GPP .WebM) what kind of video format do you used? .AVI and .WMV is recommended also there is another location folder for the hud Here (Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\download). in mirillis action make sure the record option is .Avi file format , 60 fps , video size original if framerate are still terrible Try using Fraps to record. User Karmacharger Charger 2.png Karmacharger 8:38 , 6/15/2013 (PDT)
Punishment Fatal: Since this is your first demo (and it's a big one), you should try uploading a sample clip having the same video quality as the final demonstration, in order to check that it meets the quality requirements — Wind 13:10, 15 June 2013 (PDT)
Alright, but I do run into 2 problems. My first problem is that I can't find the sound file for the recordings and that I can't find the training_vid mp3 sound files anywhere. Where might I be able to find them? Edit: Sorry for the inconvenience, but I can't do this one anymore. My frames are really bugging me with any recording software and only if I put it at the lowest settings do I get decent ones.

You can use source recorder, which can render at any framerate and any quality, regardless of how fast or slow your computer is (it'll just take more time) — Wind 15:22, 23 June 2013 (PDT)

Should i do the same way as Power Up Canteen video? User Karmacharger Charger 2.png Karmacharger 10:43 PM 7/19/2013 (PDT)
Yes. The only difference between the two (as far as I'm aware) is that the Battery Canteen doesn't have different skins for different types of fill. — Armisael (T · C) 07:46, 19 July 2013 (PDT)

So guys any suggestion? User Karmacharger Charger 2.png Karmacharger 7:37 , 7/11/2013 (PDT)
The problem is that the consumer versions of vegas are 32-bit applications, which means that they can only access 2GB of memory. If you have movie studio 11, there's an update you can get to fix this. If you're running an older version, you'll need to use CFF Explorer as described in this thread to mark it as capable of handling larger memory pools. — Armisael (T · C) 05:30, 11 July 2013 (PDT)
Thanks for respond , actually i am using vegas pro 9 but can i ask what's the different between Vegas Pro and Movie Studio? i tried the CFF Explorer and follow'd all the setups unfortunately it doesn't help , i'll try using Vegas Movie Studio HD 11.0 see if that makes any different User Karmacharger Charger 2.png Karmacharger 9:00 , 7/11/2013 (PDT)

You can use bot_forceattack2 1 to force the pyro to airblast instead of spraying flame. If that doesn't work, you'll have to find someone willing to host a server to run that map for you - I'm not aware of any. — Armisael (T · C) 14:29, 23 July 2013 (PDT)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNP-00qnwsA&feature=youtu.be (won't work because of redo) -WDZOrangeJuice (talk) 20:36, 28 July 2013 (PDT)
You've got some technical issues to correct here. You aren't recording at a 16:9 resolution, you're using custom fonts, and you seem to be having framerate issues in a couple places. There are also a few content problems, but you need to solve the technical ones first. — Armisael (T · C) 21:00, 28 July 2013 (PDT)
The custom font was included with the demonstration.vpk, and my computer is a bit weak, so I think that is causing the frame rate issues. -WDZOrangeJuice (talk) 21:46, 28 July 2013 (PDT)
Apologies - demostration.vpk had picked up some extra cruft, and one of the patches must've broken it. There's a fixed version available from on the main page now. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. — Armisael (T · C) 21:53, 28 July 2013 (PDT)

Buff Banner Buff Banner

Pictogram comment.png Should show you can hold the Banner and delay the minicrit boost if you hold down the mouse button. --Uknownada 00:53, 20 April 2013 (PDT)

Useful if true (I didn't even know), but pretty hard to demonstrate on video. Should be redone if someone can think of a way to demonstrate this clearly — Wind 16:00, 25 April 2013 (PDT)
Here's one possible way: Have a mini-video inset that shows someone's hand operating the mouse, and them clicking and releasing the button. It can be live-action or animated. Dogman15 00:17, 26 April 2013 (PDT)
Let's not do a live-action one, but animated would work, as long as it doesn't include any text — Wind 19:56, 2 May 2013 (PDT)

It won't be that hard. I actually learned it from watching TF2 videos. Just hold down the mouse button, and the horn stays on your screen. An example is minute 5:25 in this video.--Uknownada 21:08, 26 April 2013 (PDT)

I'm not sure if that's obvious enough, really. If you don't know what is going on, it feels like the buff banner is just being glitchy for a while — Wind 19:56, 2 May 2013 (PDT)
Maybe there could be a splitscreen with text in the top of each screen (similar to this video at 0:12). One screen would show the normal activation of the Buff Banner with "clicking the mouse button" in the top, and the other would show the Soldier holding the horn and walking around with it with "holding down the mouse button" in the top. That's really the only way I can think of to clearly demonstrate it. - Uufje 07:42, 3 May 2013 (PDT)
Let's go with that, but perhaps using icons like these except less phallic and more public domain. Could be used on both screens, staying there for both clips but with the button turning red when pressed on either screen. It's better to use icons than text when possible so that articles in other languages can use it as well — Wind 20:18, 6 May 2013 (PDT)

I really don't think it's a glitch. The Banner has always been able to do that. The Battalion's Backup and Concheror do the same thing (I didn't request those because I wanted this to be approved first). I'm sure you can be able to know what's going on.--Uknownada 23:34, 3 May 2013 (PDT)

I'm not saying it's a glitch, I'm saying it looks like a glitch to a viewer who doesn't know what is happening — Wind 20:18, 6 May 2013 (PDT)
I see. Okay, then.--Uknownada 15:44, 7 May 2013 (PDT)

Chargin' Targe Chargin' Targe

This is my first demonstration I will ever do, now the map I have downloaded have some missing textures. Can someone tell me what I could do? -WDZOrangeJuice (talk) 22:46, 13 July 2013 (PDT)

I've updated the main project page to have a link to the patch for the map, on the same line the map was on. My apologies - I had forgotten that it had been archived.
Also, you seem to have the right idea, but since this is your first demonstration, I would recommend you upload a ~15 second clip of you on the map to make sure that you have the technical details right. Nothing is more annoying that having to redo every last one of your clips for something minor, like a custom crosshair. — Armisael (T · C) 07:13, 14 July 2013 (PDT)
I looked at the previous Chargin' Targe Demonstration video, and it starts the demonstration with the player charging towards Soldier and hitting the Soldier with the Bottle after the shield bash. Next, the player just charges towards the Soldier, shield bashing but not attacking. Should I do that same? -WDZOrangeJuice (talk) 17:22, 14 July 2013 (PDT)
No shield bash occurs on the first charge; it's just the bottle. You should do that as well. When in doubt, duplicate the previous demonstration. — Armisael (T · C) 17:25, 14 July 2013 (PDT)
How do I spawn a RED Soldier (or any class) in front of me, and make it walk back? -WDZOrangeJuice (talk) 17:53, 14 July 2013 (PDT)
You're going to want to take a look at Bots#Puppet_bots. Moving bots is usually done with bot_teleport (when is has to be done onscreen, it's usually clever usage of bot_mimic). — Armisael (T · C) 17:58, 14 July 2013 (PDT)
Whenever I start recording, a circle appears. Will you still accept the demonstration video or will it be rejected? -WDZOrangeJuice (talk) 12:47, 15 July 2013 (PDT)
Can you upload a screenshot on it? I've never heard of this before. — Armisael (T · C) 07:00, 16 July 2013 (PDT)
I was going to take a screenshot of it today, but it didn't show up. I think it was my computer that time. -WDZOrangeJuice (talk) 19:34, 16 July 2013 (PDT)
How do I make a Bot Pyro equip a Flare Gun like the previous Chargin' Targe demonstration video? The command bot_forcefireweapon example said that bot loadouts cannot be changed. -WDZOrangeJuice (talk) 00:07, 17 July 2013 (PDT)

I think this should probably show that the cm5k can't be critboosted - something with a kritz medic, maybe. (If this was discussed and turned down when wind was around, feel free to point me at it.) — Armisael (T · C) 21:27, 12 July 2013 (PDT)
No, I don't think it was heavily discussed, so this should hopefully demonstrate it well. Download it here. --Akuago220, The Jungle Expeditioner (talk) 20:03, 14 July 2013 (PDT)
Why do you keep moving and jumping around after you've demonstrated the speed decrease once? Also, the clip with the sentry disable feels odd, it's hard to see the sentry before it's disabled. Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 21:24, 14 July 2013 (PDT)
1) A thorough reminder, one that has been passable the numerous times I redid this demonstration. It's not like it hurts the video. It didn't back then, so why now? 2)The first person who tried to make the CM 5000 demonstration had the layout set so that the sentry was constantly firing, so I came up with a less bombastic way. As you can see here, Wind supported my version and was accepting of it for the 6+ times I had to redo the demonstration. Plus, given all the wrench demonstrations, I'm sure we're all aware how a Level 3 Sentry works before it's disabled, and you get to see how it looks when it's re-enabled, anyway. --Akuago220, The Jungle Expeditioner (talk) 06:54, 15 July 2013 (PDT)
It's fine. Uploading. — Armisael (T · C) 12:33, 15 July 2013 (PDT)

I apologize for doing this, but in rewatching this video (for evidence reasons), I realized that the critboosted clips really should show the medic in the shot, not just the 'healed by' box. Hopefully this won't be too much trouble to redo. — Armisael (T · C) 11:48, 24 July 2013 (PDT)

I also don't want to be a pain (you have put a lot of work and effort into this) but I think you should show mini-crits with the cow mangular, like buff banner buff, fan-o-war (marked for death) and jarate. Mini-crits are important right? UltimentM (talk) 18:01, 26 July 2013 (PDT)

I think you shouldn't cloak before you shoot the Soldier, I think you should have some footage of you using up the cloak time and shooting a target instead of demonstrating it for the first demonstration. I think you should also use split screens to compare the cloak duration with and without the L'etranger. -WDZOrangeJuice (talk) 23:34, 19 July 2013 (PDT)
Cloaking before shooting the soldier is entirely appropriate. The splitscreen is the right thing to do, however - you should do it for all three watches. Also, you sit on the backpack screen for way too long. — Armisael (T · C) 06:57, 21 July 2013 (PDT)

While we're on the topic of demonstration, how about we demonstrate the overload jump for this gun as well. Dinner101 (talk) 16:24, 13 July 2013 (PDT)

I discussed that with Wind and Hermit527, but I'll reiterate it here. I already tried it when it first came out; there was barely any jumping force worth demonstrating. You only get shot a few inches, nothing substantial. --Akuago220, The Jungle Expeditioner (talk) 13:07, 14 July 2013 (PDT)
When you said that the overload jump only shot you a few inches, did you mean in general or compared to the regular grenade jump? I'm just wondering. --Dinner101 (talk) 15:30, 27 July 2013 (PDT)

I'm hoping this will suffice for the Loose Cannon. Download it here. --Akuago220, The Jungle Expeditioner (talk) 17:43, 23 July 2013 (PDT)

What's the point of the clip at 1:11?
The GL/LC splitscreens seem unnecessary to me (except the last one) since the LC no longer is range dependent for damage. The comparison of time until explosion is useful, but that particular one makes it appear as if the LC is exploding against the rafters. A different shot for that would be appropriate, I think.
You should also have the pyro kill you in the reflect clip at the end. — Armisael (T · C) 11:26, 24 July 2013 (PDT)
The 1:11 clip is to show the detonation time's consistency regardless of when the projectile is fired, so that the audience knows that once fired, it stays on its fixed countdown instead of restarting after launch. I could cut out the first 2 bits if that is the case, but in regards to the third clip, that was the only distant position I could have if I wanted to cause the direct target hit like in that original demonstration, but if you find that a direct hit of the target is unnecessary, then I will redo that section with a different firing position. --Akuago220, The Jungle Expeditioner (talk) 15:54, 24 July 2013 (PDT)
The detonation time is a good thing to show - it's a shame that that clip is abstruse, but I can't think of any better way to show it. Drop the first two distance clips, and redo the third one without a direct hit. — Armisael (T · C) 21:15, 25 July 2013 (PDT)

I think you show that the original allows you to make some shots around the left side of corners that you can't make with the stock launcher? Also, while you're at it, redo the right corner comparison in this one so it doesn't have the distracting pillar on the left side of the screen. Thanks. — Armisael (T · C) 21:27, 12 July 2013 (PDT)
So the same comparison, but with the left side as well? Sure. I think I'll just use a dispenser to allow a more direct (or in the case of the rocket launcher, indirect) comparison. Powerjack Powerjack

What's the purpose of the sniper in the first clip? Just more health regen? Also, I'd take the damage before killing the pyro, so it shows healing, then overhealing. Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 21:32, 14 July 2013 (PDT)
I don't want to do anything before killing the pyro, because it might make viewers think that that action is required. Thus, the sniper is present to show that the powerjack can't take beyond the 260 health overheal ceiling. The previous powerjack demonstration had an almost identical first clip, for the record. — Armisael (T · C) 12:33, 15 July 2013 (PDT)

I hope I'm allowed to do this then. Third time lucky... TFHK 11:37, 14 May 2013 (PDT)
I'm currently working on this demonstration. However, I've noticed a few differences between my trials and in the video that's currently in use, namely the first part:
  • The teleporter that's shot (i.e. the one with lower health) doesn't make a sound when returning to toolbox state, and, strangely, neither does the other one.
  • The dispenser doesn't give a "used" red-tape upon being destroyed and returned to toolbox state.
Is there any reason for this? There's practically no difference between my set-up and the one in the current video, apart from the fact that an engineer is standing next to the dispenser (to show that the sapper stops supplying metal/healing after being sapped) TFHK 10:30, 15 May 2013 (PDT)

The backpack clip is too long. You should show another type of knockback - force-a-nature, perhaps. It needs a splitscreen, and you should use r_cleardecals to clean up the blood before you start recording those splitscreens. — Armisael (T · C) 06:57, 21 July 2013 (PDT)

Are you sure that's a custom font? A while ago it suddenly changed to that font, I assumed it was because of an update. I just reinstalled TF2 and it kept that same font. - Uufje 10:23, 24 July 2013 (PDT)
Yeah. Take a look at the Cow Mangler demo Akuago submitted around 2:30 - it has the distinctively stylized TF2 font. — Armisael (T · C) 11:48, 24 July 2013 (PDT)

Assuming your tf/custom is clear of everything other than the demonstration files, I'd try renaming/deleting your tf/resources folder and then verifying cache integrity. That's where the font files are stored, so that should fix it. — Armisael (T · C) 20:36, 26 July 2013 (PDT)

Wouldn't it be better to show in a splitscreen. InstantMan (talk) 18:28, 12 July 2013 (PDT)

I think it wouldn't work very well in a splitscreen. You have to jump at different times with and without the winger to maximize your height/distance, so a splitscreen would either be disingenuous or hard to follow. I can post a quick version if you'd like, though. — Armisael (T · C) 09:16, 13 July 2013 (PDT)
Agree about the splitscreen. However, you didn't shoot the target, and last time you did this demo you ended it with 2 ammo, not 1. That would save you ammo, and would mean you could put the jumps in a separate clip (a visual break for the viewer?) Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 21:35, 14 July 2013 (PDT)
http://youtu.be/o46NpltJLzA Is this better?
I've uploaded another Winger video, but I think it needs a little work though. It hasn't been edited. http://youtu.be/gtcpvWl_iyU UltimentMUltimentM (talk) 01:44, 15 July 2013 (PDT)
First, technical flaws (in order of appearance): you have a custom font, your mouse isn't visible in the backpack screen, and you need to download the new map patch from the main page.
As for content, you should use the escape key to close the backpack menu, use r_cleardecals to clean up enormous blood stains (like in the jump clip), a scout without the winger can make the jump you show by crouch-jumping, and you should show a long distance jump as well. Also, do you have bullet spread disabled? You had fantastic accuracy in the opening clip.
I apologize if this is a little terse - I didn't want to make you hunt through a wall of text for these points. This is really good for a first demo. — Armisael (T · C) 12:33, 15 July 2013 (PDT)
Wait, do we not disable bullet spread? I thought that we did, to help with those long-range shots. Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 12:35, 15 July 2013 (PDT)
Unlike damage spread and random pellet spread, bullet spread is definitely left enabled. Disabling the random spread results in wildly different results than what actually happens in game. With spread, the winger only manages to kill all the bots and hit the target before running out of bullets about 40% of the time. Without spread, it does it with a full mag left. — Armisael (T · C) 12:39, 15 July 2013 (PDT)
Thanks, I appreciate all of your feedback and responses. It is hard to make a demonstration video. UltimentM (talk) 23:06, 15 July 2013 (PDT)
Good luck! @Armisael, wait, what's the difference between pellet spread and bullet spread? I was just thinking of the command tf_use_fixed_weaponspreads. Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 06:38, 16 July 2013 (PDT)
Using a fixed pellet spread gives you a particular pattern to the pellets as they come out - a grid, in our case. Disabling bullet spread results in all bullets going exactly down the crosshair, even on a minigun. It's not very representative of actual gameplay, unles you're hacking. — Armisael (T · C) 07:00, 16 July 2013 (PDT)

Questions and Proposals

Question about the Sniper Rifles

Since the massive July 10th update, headshots with all sniper rifles (except Sydney Sleeper since it cannot headshot) now display "CRITICAL HIT" over the head of the sniped player from the first person view. I was wondering if this would require redos of all sniper rifles or if it's too minor a reason to. - ShinyLuma (talk) 19:56, 19 July 2013 (PDT)

It's one of the advanced options, I think that option we turn it "off" in demonstration. User Hinaomi Hinaomi-sig.png Rikka Takanashi (talk) • (contributions) 20:03, 19 July 2013 (PDT)
Ah ok, got it. ShinyLuma (talk) 20:08, 19 July 2013 (PDT)
That option is entirely new (so we had no policy for it), and I rule that we should make sure that it's turned on in all new demonstrations. — Armisael (T · C) 06:57, 21 July 2013 (PDT)
Got it. I forgot to mention the "CRITICAL HIT" also displays with spy backstabs and ambassador headshots, not just sniper rifle headshots. Just for future reference. ShinyLuma (talk) 17:54, 21 July 2013 (PDT)
I believe that it displays with all critical hits, regardless of source. — Armisael (T · C) 19:01, 21 July 2013 (PDT)
I'm curious about something about all rifles. If you no scope shot an enemy and there's an ally in front of the enemy, the shot will hit the enemy. If you are scoped though in the same situation, the fired shot will not hit the enemy. I'm not sure if that's worth redoing a lot of the rifle demos. P.S.: I'm new here so sorry if I did anything wrong -SwordM13X24
Too much work for a marginal benefit. Our goal is more the broad outlines of the weapon, not every last buggy detail. — Armisael (T · C) 06:57, 21 July 2013 (PDT)
Well if that's the case then, who would be the best person to ask to add that note to all the rifle pages or the appropriate page? Thanks for the help. -SwordM13X24
