The Ghastly Gibus is an unlockable headwear item available to all classes. It appears as a slightly damaged, black gibus hat with the top nearly detached. In a similar fashion to the Gentle Manne's Service Medal, the first possible method of getting this hat was to be one of the first 10,319 people to visit a hidden web page. The alternative method, through which it can still be unlocked, is to complete the Ghastly Gibus Grab achievement by dominating a player wearing the hat. Unlike the Mildly Disturbing Halloween Mask you are not restricted to when you can wear the hat. This hat can be worn all year round.

All Ghastly Gibus earned prior to the Scream Fortress update were changed to Ghastlier Gibus.

Trivia

• The hat's original description was "Embroidered initials say 'Z.M.'", a reference to Zepheniah Mann.

• The gibus was invented in 1800–10 and named for its inventor, a 19th century Frenchman. It is a men's tall, collapsible top hat, held open or in shape by springs and usually covered with a black, silky fabric. It was made collapsible so that patrons of the opera could place it under their seats during the show, often garnering it the name "opera hat."

• The amount of original Gibuses, 10,319, is a reference to the date they were given out, 10/31/09.

• Although there were 10,319 original Gibuses, none of these hats report what number they are.
  • However, if you received your Gibus from the secret webpage, it is possible to use an item manager (such as the debug view on TF2items.com) to view what number your Gibus is.

• It was possible to obtain two Ghastly Gibuses: by finding one through the hidden web page, while the giveaway was in practice, and by earning one with the achievement. This originally served no practical purpose, as the Gibus cannot be crafted into anything else and one single Gibus can be worn by all classes at once, but since the addition of Paint Cans players with two Gibuses can have them in two different colours. If the second Gibus was obtained before the Scream Fortress update, the owner would have two Ghastlier Gibuses.

• While every Ghastly Gibus is marked as non tradeable, only the ones obtained with the Ghastly Gibus Grab Scarechievement are marked as non craftable (such as all achievement items). However, trying to craft an original one still doesn't match any blueprint.

• Since the Scream Fortress update, when using a paint can on the Ghastly Gibus, the whole model changes color as opposed to just the band. The same occurs with the Ghastlier Gibus.

• The Ghastly Gibus is not tradable, while the Ghastlier Gibus is. This gives players who have the Ghastly Gibus a chance to collect both, while players only with the Ghastlier Gibus cannot obtain both, unless they received a Ghastly Gibus from the secret webpage, and haven't earned the Ghastly Gibus Grab achievement yet.
