The Engineer on buying the game

The Proof of Purchase is a special headwear item for all classes. It appears as an olive green Template:W with slight battle damage and Team Fortress 2 logo of a slightly darker shade emblazoned on the side. A narrow belt with a gold buckle extends around the back, over the wearer's neck.

This hat is available to those who purchased Team Fortress 2 before the Über Update on June 23, 2011[1], those who receive a gift of the game[2] and those who activate a retail copy of the game.

Update history

June 23, 2011 Patch (Über Update)

  • The Proof of Purchase was added to the game.

Bugs

  • The Proof of Purchase was obtainable for almost two hours before the update went live. Players who received the hat as a drop actually received a broken item at the time called the "NamelessItem". It was a "Level 50 Map Item" that was a "Store Promotional Item / Not Tradable." It lacked the usual preview image, so players did not know what the item actually was. The item was fixed once the backpack and Mann Co. Store were available again after the update.
  • When a Spy disguises as a victim wearing the Proof of Purchase, the hat will clip with the disguise's head.
  • The Proof of Purchase disappears upon death.

Trivia

  • The Template:W was also referred to as the Tin Helmet or Doughboy helmet. Less affectionately, it was called a Shrapnel Helmet for its tendency to break when hit by a bullet. The hat was famous during the World Wars, in both of which the Allies used the Brodie Helmet.
  • The description references the hat's origins. The hat itself is from the TF2 Alpha that was leaked in 2003 with Half-Life 2's beta. It was worn by the Commando class, what seemed to be the Soldier class at the time. The character design can be found in the artwork section of the TF2 official website in the concept art section.
