The Engineer on buying the game

The Proof of Purchase is a special headwear item for all classes. It appears as an olive green Template:W, or US M17A1 helmet, made by Ford, with slight scratches and battle damage and Team Fortress 2 logo of a slightly darker shade emblazoned on the side. A narrow chinstrap with a polished brass buckle extends around the back, over the wearer's neck, which was the popular way to wear this type of helmet.

This hat is given to players who purchased Team Fortress 2 before the Über Update on June 23, 2011[1], those who received a gift of the game[2], and those who activated a retail copy of the game.

Trivia

  • The Template:W was also referred to as the Tin Helmet; or better know as the Tin Lizzie, which was named due to that they were manufactured by Ford, or Doughboy helmet. Less affectionately, it was called a Shrapnel Helmet for its tendency to be bent inwardly or break when hit by a bullet. The hat was famous during the World Wars, in both of which the Allies used the Brodie Helmet.
  • The description references the hat's origins. The hat itself is visible on the Human Commando player model from the early "Invasion" version of Team Fortress 2, as well as the files that were leaked in 2003 with Half-Life 2's source code.
    • The hat can also be seen in two concept images that appear on the Artwork section of TeamFortress.com [1] [2]]
