The Backbiter's Billycock is a paintable hat.

Trivia

  • The Tom Bowler, or Billycock, was originally designed for horseback riders. The tighter-fitting brim and relatively low crown made it harder to topple off its owner's head. Some had complained of low tree branches knocking off their silk top hats, which were the preferred style of the gentry at the time.
  • The popularity of the bowler hat increased in young men during the 1960s and 1970s after the release of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange.
  • This hat is similar to the one worn by Oddjob, a villain from the James Bond series.
  • A similar hat was also worn by the British agent John Steed in the 1960s Spy Fi television series The Avengers, as well as by the titular character and his associates in the 1999 heist film The Thomas Crown Affair.
  • The term "Backbiter" means a person who says nasty things about another person [1], so the hat's name may refer to the Spy's tendency to badmouth opponents. It could also, however, refer to the pain one feels when being stabbed in the back.
  • The Spy's Billycock looks similar to the Modest Pile of Hat. However, the Modest Pile of Hat is grey, has a thicker rim, and a much more noticeable hatband.
  • When a Spy wears the billycock and the Camera Beard most people in the Team fortress 2 Community call it "jewish spy" relating to look look about the hat with the beard like the traditional Jewish man.
