The Alien Swarm Parasite is an unlockable headwear item for all Classes. It is obtained by earning the Hat Trick achievement in the game Alien Swarm by completing 2 co-op missions (regardless of difficulty setting) online.
Trivia
- This is the second hat that appears to be a living creature, the other being the Triboniophorus Tyrannus.
- This hat is the first and only item to be unlocked via the achievements of another game.
- This hat was speculated days before the game was even released due to the Heavy appearing on the icon for the Hat Trick achievement.
- This hat looks much like a facehugger from the Alien franchise or a headcrab, parasitic enemy from the Half-Life series.
- This hat will split into two whenever someone wearing it dies; this also happens in Alien Swarm where if the player dies from infection, the parasite splits into two or three, depending on the difficulty.
- If you taunt with the Sniper's Kukri or Shiv, the Sniper will pull the parasite off of his head, before putting it back on - not a particularly clever idea if the hat is indeed alive.
- The Heavy wears his parasite hat differently in-game than on the Hat Trick achievement icon.
- This is the only promotional hat without a limited supply.
- With the Mann-conomy update, this hat emits the same sound as a Swarm Parasite in Alien Swarm when picked up in the backpack.
- The description for this hat was written by user Grug16 for the Hat Describing Contest. Valve removed the words "Isn't that nice?" from the end of the original entry.
- The tail is jiggleboned, swaying slightly as the wearer moves.
