The Ghastly Gibus is an unlockable headwear item available to all classes. It appears as a slightly damaged, black gibus hat with the top nearly detached. In a similar fashion to the Gentle Manne's Service Medal, the first possible method of getting this hat was to be one of the first 10,319 people to visit a hidden web page. The alternative method, through which it can be still be unlocked, is to complete the Ghastly Gibus Grab achievement by dominating a player wearing the hat.

Trivia
- The hat's original description was "Embroidered initials say 'Z.M.'".
- The gibus, also known as the opera hat, was invented in 1800–10 and named for its inventor, a 19th century Frenchman. It is a men's tall, collapsible top hat, held open or in shape by springs and usually covered with a black, silky fabric.
- This is one of only three hats available through completing achievements, the other two are The Alien Swarm Parasite and the Mildly disturbing Halloween mask
- The ghost of Zepheniah Mann can be seen wearing this hat while haunting the event version of Harvest.
- The ghost of Zepheniah Mann wearing the gibus, can be found underneath the control point in the event version of Harvest.
- The Ghastly Gibus is somewhat similar to the Scotsman's Stove Pipe.
- The hat may also be a reference to "gib", a term used when a character in a video game is killed in a very gory way, often scattering the characters various body parts apart.
- The amount of people who obtained a Gibus hat from the secret webpage, 10,319, is the date of Halloween 2009, 10/31/09.
- Although there were 10,319 original Gibuses, none of these hats report what number they are.
- However, if you received your Gibus from the secret webpage, it is possible to use an item manager (such as the debug view on TF2items.com) to view what number your Gibus is.
- It was possible to obtain two Ghastly Gibuses: by finding one through the hidden web page, while the giveaway was in practice, and by earning one with the achievement (though this serves no practical purpose, as the Gibus cannot be currently crafted into anything else, and one single Gibus can be worn by all classes at once).
- While every Ghastly Gibus are marked as non tradeable, only the ones obtained with the Ghastly Gibus Grab Scarechievement are marked as non craftable (such as all achievement items). However, trying to craft an original one still doesn't match any blueprint.
- The Gibus was misspelled "Ghostly Gibus" in the TF2 Official Blog. However, it was probably just what the Soldier thought it was named.
- Because of how common the hat is, modelers tend to only make their custom hats replace the Gibus.
- When painted, the only part of the Gibus that changes color is the ribbon that circles the hat just above the brim.
- The hat description was written by Esquilax.
- The October 6, 2010 update made it to where the Ghastly Gibus was made no longer tradable.
- The Ghastly Gibus is, by far, the most hated Hat on Team Fortress 2 due to how common it is.
