The Frenchman's Beret is an unlockable headwear item for the Spy. It was modelled after the style of the stereotypical artist's beret, hence the two paint brushes on the left side.

Trivia

• Berets are worn by both men and women and are usually associated with France, although it is in fact rather specific only to the Pyrenees. It has also been occasionally a traditional or fashionable headgear in the Netherlands and Italy.
• It appears that the article titled "Wearing Berets: Not on our Watch! How You Can Help..." in the magazine Hat-Wearing Man failed to deter the Spy from donning berets such as this one.
• This hat was submitted under the name of the "Bourgeois Beret" before Valve changed it to the "Frenchman's Beret." Daimao thinks it may be because Bourgeois would be a hard word to pronounce and remember.
• Daimao has stated in an interview on Ubercharged.net that he had Mister Royzo (another well-attributed modder and creator of the Fancy vs. Nasty Update) texture the BLU skin in an attempt to get another person a self-made item, not because he was colorblind (that was a rumor - Daimao is not actually colorblind).
• The beret was a symbol of French resistance during World War II.
• The BLU skin of the beret seems to be a painted version of the RED one. Spots of red are visible on the BLU version while no blue is visible on the RED version.
• Ironically, the only hat to have a painting theme, hence the two brushes that come with it, can not be painted.
• This hat seems to symbolize the traditional art of killing such as assassination, which is a reference to the "backstab".
