- This hat was in fashion during the late 17th century and 18th century. It fell out of style shortly before the French Revolution. At the peak of its popularity, the tricorne was worn as civilian dress and as part of military and naval uniforms.
- A 'tippler' refers to a person who engages in regular, excessive or habitual consumption of alcohol.
- The distinguishing characteristic of the hat is its practicality. The turned-up portions of the brim form gutters that direct rainwater away from the wearer's face.
