The Pugilist's Protector is a headwear item for the Heavy. It takes the form of a team-coloured padded helmet, with Mann Co. stamped on the front and a team-coloured plastic mouth-guard, similar to those worn by boxers to absorb and deflect blows to the face and mouth.

Trivia
- The term 'pugilist' is synonymous with 'fist-fighter' and is likely a reference to the Heavy's preferred melee weapons of choice: the Killing Gloves of Boxing or the Gloves of Running Urgently and, naturally, his own Fists.
- Headgear is used to protect boxers from soft tissue damage, (bruises, cuts, etc), during sparring - also used in competition in amateur boxing.
- This is one of four items in TF2 that have the logo of Mann Co. on it (the others being the Direct Hit, the Whoopee Cap and the Mann Co. Cap).
- The Primeval Warrior, Grizzled Veteran, Soldier of Fortune and Mercenary Medals along with all 4 Dueling Badges also have the Mann Co. logo on them.
- The Pugilist's Protector is so far the only hat that has parts inside a character's mouth, in this case the mouthpiece.
- The straps are jiggleboned and move freely.
- It is unknown how the Heavy manages to eat his Sandvich with the mouth piece in.
- Because it is impossible to connect parts of models to moving face positions, the Heavy's teeth will sometimes move outside the mouthguard and leave it sitting in the senter of his mouth.
