The Triboniophorus Tyrannus, known to the community as the "Brain Slug," is a community-created headwear item for the Pyro and was chosen by Valve to be released with the first wave of community-contributed content due to its outstanding quality. It appears as a green, gelatinous slug, placed off-center atop the Pyro's gas mask.

Trivia
- This hat is similar to the brain slugs that occasionally appeared in the animated television show by Matt Groening, Futurama, where they would be attached to someone's head and control their mind, forcing them to appear semi-comatose, talk in a monotonous tone, and do anything to spread the brain slugs throughout the universe. The brain slugs in the cartoon, however, had one large eye instead of two small eyes, as well as two antennae.[1]
- This hat also bears a striking resemblance to one found in the Steam-hosted racing game Zero Gear. This hat is available as both a playable character and headgear in Zero Gear, which is about as obsessed with hats as Team Fortress 2.
- The Triboniophorus is a type of green slug native to Australia. "Tyrannus" is Latin for "tyrant" or "king".
