The Ghastly Gibus is an unlockable headwear item for all classes. It appears as a slightly damaged, black gibus hat with the top nearly detached. In a similar fashion to the Gentle Manne's Service Medal, the first possible method of getting this hat was to be one of the first 10,319 people to visit a hidden web page. The alternative method, through which it can still be unlocked, is to complete the Ghastly Gibus Grab achievement by dominating a player wearing the hat. Unlike the Mildly Disturbing Halloween Mask, players are not restricted to when they can wear the hat. This hat can be worn all year round.
The hat description was written by Esquilax for the Hat Describing Contest.

Trivia
- The hat's original description was "Embroidered initials say 'Z.M.'", a reference to Zepheniah Mann.
- Before the Scream Fortress update, only the stripe on this hat could be painted. Now the paint is applied to the entire item.
- The Template:W was invented in 1800–10 and named for its inventor, a 19th century Frenchman. It is a men's collapsible top hat, held open or in shape by springs and usually covered with a black, silky fabric. It was made collapsible so that patrons of the opera could place it under their seats during the show, often garnering it the name "opera hat."
- The amount of original Gibuses, 10,319, is a reference to the date they were given out, 10/31/09.
- Although there were 10,319 original Gibuses, the items do not include a number indicating the order in which they were acquired.
- It was possible to obtain two Ghastly Gibuses by finding one through the hidden web page while the giveaway was in practice, and by earning one with the Ghastly Gibus Grab achievement. This originally served no practical purpose, as the Gibus could be crafted into anything else and one single Gibus could be worn by all classes at once. Since the addition of Paint Cans, players can possess multiple Gibuses each painted a different color. If the second Gibus was obtained before the Scream Fortress update, the owner would have two Ghastlier Gibuses.
- While every Ghastly Gibus is marked as non-tradable, only the ones obtained with the Ghastly Gibus Grab Scarechievement are marked as non craftable (such as all achievement items). However, trying to craft an original Gibus still doesn't match any blueprints.
- The Ghastly Gibus is not tradable, while the Ghastlier Gibus is. This gives players who have the Ghastly Gibus a chance to collect both, while players only with the Ghastlier Gibus cannot obtain both, unless they received a Ghastly Gibus from the secret webpage, and haven't earned the Ghastly Gibus Grab achievement yet.
