The Triboniophorus Tyrannus, known to the community as the "Brain Slug," is a community-created headwear item for the Pyro and was chosen by Valve to be released with the first wave of community-contributed content due to its outstanding quality. It appears as a green, gelatinous slug attached diagonally atop the gas mask of the Pyro's head.

Trivia
- This hat is similar to the brain slugs that occasionally appeared in the animated television show Futurama, where they would be attached to someone's head, controlling their mind, forcing them to appear semi-comatose , talk in a monotonous tone, and do anything to spread the brain slugs throughout the universe. The brain slugs in the cartoon however had one large eye instead of two small eyes.
- The description (written by crushilista) may also be a reference to Futurama. Because the brain slug controls the host's mind, it may be referring to how it would be convenient that it's still telling the Pyro to burn things, which is his usual job, and perhaps usual thoughts.
- The description may also be a reference to The Simpsons where the character Ralph Wiggum belives he sees a Leprechaun that tells him to burn things.
- The description (written by crushilista) may also be a reference to Futurama. Because the brain slug controls the host's mind, it may be referring to how it would be convenient that it's still telling the Pyro to burn things, which is his usual job, and perhaps usual thoughts.
- This hat also bears a striking resemblance to one found in the Steam-hosted racing game Zero Gear. Zero Gear is about as obsessed with hats as Team Fortress 2, where this hat is available as a headgear and a character. The Pyro's hat is identical to the character/hat in Zero Gear.
- The Triboniophorus Tyrannus is one of the few hats that are jiggleboned, meaning that they will jiggle around realistically with the player's movement.
- The Triboniophorus is a type of green slug native to Australia. "Tyrannus" is Latin for "tyrant" or "king."
- It is the first hat thought to be a living creature, the other being the Alien Swarm Parasite.
- The Triboniophorus Tyrannus, unlike most hats, does not fall off the Pyro's head once he dies, not even if he gibs, in which case it simply disappears.
