Update history
September 30, 2010 Patch (Mann-Conomy Update)

Notes
- The Pugilist's Protector is worn by Heavyweight Champ (Type 1) in Mann vs. Machine.
- Due to how the materials are set up, the textures for the Pugilist's Protector change when running TF2 below
dxlevel 90
(such asdxlevel 80
). This is due Paint Cans originally not working underdxlevel 90
when they were first introduced during the Mann-Conomy Update. The Hatless Update updated the paint system to work ondxlevel 80
, removing nearly all instances of_dx8
on each item's materials, with the exception of the Pugilist's Protector.
Due to how the textures are set up, if the game is launched with a dxlevel
below 90
, the Pugilist's Protector's single color Paint Cans look different compared to when running on dxlevel 90
or above. The colorization will also changes between teams.

Trivia
- The mouth-guard is similar to those worn by boxers, also known as pugilists, to prevent damage to the mouth, teeth, and jaw, as well as to reduce the risk of concussion caused by direct blows to the head.
