The Gentle Manne's Service Medal is an unlockable Miscellaneous item for the Soldier. It appears as a small gold medal on the Soldier's chest with a team colored ribbon. The medal is not unlockable in-game, even via random drops, and was instead given away via a hidden page on the Classless Update website. It was awarded to the first 11,111 players who visited the page. After the August 21, 2009 patch, the medals became individually numbered up to #11,111 in the item's description, effectively making each individual medal completely unique. As of the October 27th, 2010 Halloween update patch, the medals are now tradeable.
The item description was written by Lamech.
Trivia
- The Service Medal was the first miscellaneous item in TF2, and the first item in the game with a limited quantity.
- The image of the Gentle Manne's Service Medal on the hidden page bears the Team Fortress logo, though in-game, the medal is blank.
- The hidden page now bears this message: "To those who didn't, better luck next time...", but no other Medals have been released in the same manner to this date.
- The image on the hidden page can also be purchased as a poster from Valve's store, though it has been censored, with the cigar in the Soldier's hand replaced with a mug of coffee. It can also be bought as an iPhone Gelaskin; uncensored.
- It is speculated that the number 11,111 is possibly a reference to the "Meet the Spy" trailer video, when the Soldier is trying to open the door that leads into the Intelligence room, the code he enters into the doors keypad is "1,1,1, uhh, 1!" as he says aloud.
