The Gentle Manne's Service Medal is an unlockable miscellaneous item for the Soldier. It appears as a small gold medal on the Soldier's chest with a team colored ribbon. The medal is not unlockable in-game, even via random drops, and was instead given away via a hidden page on the Classless Update website. It was awarded to the first 11,111 players who visited the page.
Trivia
- The number of visitors to which the medal was awarded was likely a nod to the combination the Soldier entered to access the Intelligence room in Meet the Spy ("1, 1, 1, uhhh...1!").
- After the August 21, 2009 patch, the medals became individually numbered up to #11,111 in the item's description.
- A duo of unfinished medals can be found and equipped on the Soldier in the model viewer, but are not implemented for wear.
- The image of the Gentle Manne's Service Medal on the hidden page bears the Team Fortress logo, though in-game, the medal is blank.
- The hidden page now bears this message: "To those who didn't, better luck next time..." This is probably a reference to the Ghastly Gibus challenge that occurred during the Halloween Special, or perhaps hinting at another similar giveaway in future.
- A few of the medals didn't have numbers, according to this backpack.
- Although a player may have the Gentle Manne's Service Medal equipped, using the inspect key towards that player will not display the medal within the "%PLAYERNAME% is carrying:" item inspection window.
- This Misc. item cannot be crafted with a second hat to make a new hat in the same way that most class specific Hats and misc items can be.
- The image on the hidden page can also be purchased as a poster from Valve's store, though it has been censored, with the cigar in the Soldier's hand replaced with a mug of coffee. It can also be bought as an iPhone Gelaskin, but it is uncensored.
- The description text contains a grammatical error: it should read "...to those few brave soldiers who..." instead of "whom."
- The Gentle Manne's Service Medal is the only specific-class item that cannot be traded, renamed or paintable.
